algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi guys,

...after a time I return with Grasshopper...if I panelize a surf It seems slow. A few minutes

for every iteration. It' s normal?

What's the best sistem?

This is my sistem:

Intel Core i7 cpu 950 3.07 GHZ

ram 12GB

Geoforce GTX 570

W8

Wouldn't it make more sense to try and find the bottleneck in your computation rather than shopping for a new computer? Have you used the Performance Profiler widget to find which components take the most time?

These people don't seem to be too happy about your processor in any case.

I vote for checking into bottlenecks as well.

Depending on the complexity of your paneling definition, I would say yes, it is normal. I've had definitions take numerous hours to go through a few dozens iterations.

Although they might not like your CPU, any of today's CPU's are more than capable of executing GH  definitions without a hitch.

...and if CPU is the most important component for  Grasshopper calculation an

would give me double speed with iterations?

Display > Canvas Widgets > Profiler

This will display the time each component takes to run.

You can enable the profiler widget via the Grasshopper Display menu. It displays underneath each component how long it took to run.

3.20 GHz is not that much faster than 3.07 GHz. It will not give you a significant boost. You need to find out which component is taking up all this time and then maybe it's possible to reduce that. Maybe not, maybe you really need to perform a million boolean operations in which case there's no much you can do.

Ok I'm afraid there's not much to be done there. Morphing geometry is a slow process, though you may be able to speed it up by upping your Rhino document tolerance settings. If you're deforming geometry that is 10 miles across with millimeter accuracy, then you're going to spend a lot of time computing a lot of detail you don't in fact need.

How big is your geometry compared to the Rhino absolute tolerance settings?

I have panelize a  ring (a jewel..around 1 inch... ) with around 400 items

Have I understand what you want? In the previous image there is  the geometries and tollerance I work.

I continue waiting time for any iterations in my experiments.

I'm working also with the PanelingTools menu and components

have sense to pay 400-500 dollars for a new

 Intel Core i7-3930K 3,20GHz 12MB?

sorry, I'm travelling now so I can't respond too often. I don't think forking out for a new processor is going to make it much faster. Maybe 5~10%, but that's about it.

Looking at the shapes you're after, I think it would be better to look into T-Splines instead. They are very good at making shapes like that.
