Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

To what extents can grasshopper be implemented in the parametric design process?

Hello all readers,

I am wondering to what extents can grasshopper be used in the parametric design process. I would like to think a building can be described completely from its parameters- once they are defined. I am doing a study on this and I am relevantly new to using grasshopper as a programme. I am currently working on a mixed use development as a case study and Im attempting to write a generative algorithm for spacial analysis of the site as I type this. I figure by defining the parameters in this programme as subsets within subsets and so on..., that the whole development will appear infront of my eyes without using any coventional 'designer' input.

Is this possible? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Does anybody know is there any tutorials guiding generative algorithms to complete an optimal massing solution for a defined space?

Yes, in my experience Grasshopper is built for this type of thinking, but it may get very heavy using Grasshopper.  Try "sketching" in Grasshopper some of your basic ideas and then see if it can do what you want...and how far it can take you.

Thanks for your reply, are you suggesting that this is possible providing the system can handle the amount of data inputted to grasshopper?

I would like to also think that it may be used as an adaptive method of building, one where dynamic inputs could adapt a whole metamorphical building type pending on the complexity of the materials used for their purpose. Could this programme be used for more than parametric design?

I am a futurist at heart but I would like to gage experiences with limitations on here with experienced users.

Any comments are welcomed and appreciated.

"Could this programme be used for more than parametric design?"

By metaphor of course.
