algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi, I am very new to grasshopper and am trying to reverse engineer the ICD/ITKE pavilion (image attached). 

I started out by creating the main form in Rhino then using the Hexagon cells from the lunchbox plug-in to create the individual hexagons of the pavilion.

However, they are not coming out the way I want them to. The hexagon cells come out on an entire sphere instead of just the surface I created. I have attached an image of my current results.Please help!

Am I doing this the wrong way? If so, is there another method in creating this pavilion in grasshopper?

Not a task for a novice that one.

Anyway: the L does business by dividing the underlying surface (a trimmed single face Brep is: (a) the trimming info + (b) the underlying surface). Additionally it yields a List instead of a Tree (that's an issue in most of cases [for properly controlling the modules]). 

Thus you should cull the hex modules appropriately.

I'm still quite lost as to how to create the extruded hexagonal components onto a surface. Is there a way to create these individual components onto a surface without the hexagon grid from the lunchbox plug-in? 

Well ... given the opportunity:

1. Get paper and a pencil > turn off computer (or better: burn it).

2. Draw a rectangular grid of points - exactly what the divide surface component does.

3. Try to connect them in such a way that hexagons are made: this is what Lunchbox does (with regard any pattern).

4. Doing these "patterns" via the Relative Items component is very easy ...  but ... well ... the majority of users find this quite mysterious.

If you are still lost in space I could provide an example (Lunchbox and/or Relative Items).

 

I would replace "Relative Items" by "Split Tree" component...but I would do it in the same way...indeed I've explained this procedure a  lot of times in my workshops: it's pretty straight forward, you just need to be organized with your selection rules.
