Seems like a combination of twisting and flowing (along a curve). Or maybe some volumetric deformation like a CageEdit or just an equation.

Either way I'd definitely not deform any surfaces this way, but deform the simplest objects you need in order to create the final result. Either just points or maybe curves, then reconstruct from the deformed geometry. Spatially morphing high quality breps is the easiest way to generate low quality breps.
