Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi,

I'm trying to reverse engineer the Canopy Project by United Visual Artists and I'm having some trouble figuring out the right way to go about it.

I'm having problems with trying to make the individual pieces maintain a connection to each other. Obviously it's a custom geometry so I can't use a hexagonal grid that already has connecting pieces.

I've been trying it with box morph tools but obviously that creates gaps between each element along the surface.

any ideas? I am fully open to trying different techniques this is just the way I thought to begin with.

I've included my definition for the box morph and file as well as an image of what i'm trying to recreate.

thank you in advance

Sam.

That said, I think the UVA's pattern is a Cairo pentagonal tiling, which can be derived from a basketweave tiling. A quick Google search revealed this: Tatami + Cairo Tessellations.

Hope this helps.

I was interested in Marios's cairo tessellation, so I played around with it. I've updated and modified it a bit.
