extrude profiles normal to curve

Hi all: 

this seems like it should be an easy one, but I can't get the results I want. 

I want to extrude a profile curve along a series of non planer rail curves, so that the profile always stays normal to the curve direction.     

I am using extrude along curve.  it generally works, but the profile keeps the orientation it has in the model space, which give flat extrusions in some directions. 

any suggestions?
