Can someone please explain the functionality of Intersect Mass and Solve Adjacencies component?

I am getting confused with these two components.

I have tried to find a good example to understand the functionality of these two components to, but have failed. and have tried to find the right example for the uses.

I would like to know when we can use these two different components to make the simulation process right.

do we use "intersect mass component" to physically divide the two overlapping geometries?

my understanding for "solve adjacencies" component was also similar. When we have two connected zones (for those walls overlapping), the component checks whether the walls overlap, and when it does it splits the wall (physically?) in order to separate surfaces from the non-overlapping wall part.

It will be much appreciated if someone can kindly explain (maybe through some example file) to explain the functionality of each component and how they are different from each other.

Thank you!

Hi John,

SolveAdjacencies component doesn't intersect. It requires intersected same geometries to match between zones and assign some constructions and boundary conditions of the surfaces(like Adiabatic, Outdoor, Ground and etc.).

Intersect mass component, take a list of close breps, and split their surfaces to ensure that there are matched surfaces between breps.

because  Energyplus in the analysis looking for heat flows in the surfaces and if EP cannot find match surfaces between two zones you have some error about this after simulation.

best,

Omid.

John,

Omid's answer is good and, if you still need a bit more of an explanation, these two videos will visually walk you thorough what each component does:
