There are actually no hexagonal cells within the pattern. It's simply a grid of triangular cells that contract at their 3 vertices "collapsing" into the center forming a Y shape.  When 6 "Y" shapes are joined the hexagonal grid appears.  However the logic of the collapsing is a simple point attractor.

What kind of logic to you use to determine which hexagonal cells are empty and which are open?
