Zbrush is definitely on my wishlist - as are socks and underwear.

Nik, good call, it is a Tsplines object. Then brought into Grasshopper and Catmull-Clarked to further subdivide, which retains the mostly quad aspect. The gems are produced from Nurb curves circumscribed by the edges of each mesh face and are patch surfaces through these curves and the face centroids moved slightly outward. The white matrix is Cytoskeleton applied to the mesh. I have to familiarize myself with Cocoon, maybe that would be more versatile. The color distribution is courtesy of David Man's mesh+ face-band component.

In my second iteration, by including the edge midpoints and not just the corners, I made the nurb curves hug the edges more tightly, hence making a larger patch and tighter gem packing.
