asshopper via the user datagram protocol (UDP) was to effectively speed up communication between programs without the use of each program writing and reading a text file. This investigation was begun to open up Grasshopper to the outside world and eventually use it to drive physical associations via arduino and other interfaces. Processing was used initially as it is a very simple platform to used to test communication to and from Grasshopper. The first objective of the investigation was to eventually connect up with a custom plugin which Shajay Bhooshan has been developing.
On the Maya side, Shajay is controlling and augmenting this already vast platform with custom C++ API Nodes. His work can be seen on We Work 4 Her. This particular ‘fluid_UDP_Node’ transmits fluid data per voxel over UDP. Shajay has also taken advantage of the Open Frameworks, leveraging some of the code within the Maya plugin.
On the Rhino Grasshopper side, I have developed a very simple UDP receiver component in vb.net. The data is transmitted as one long string of comma separated values. Currently Shajay can send me fluid density and velocity information per voxel, but really, any type of information could be sent out. This information is parsed in the GH component and used to visualize the fluid as a Surface. As with the rest of the UDP experiments, Giulio Piacentino’s “The Engine” (http://www.giuliopiacentino.com/grasshopper-tools/) component made the refreshing of the Grasshopper canvas possible.
As you can tell, running all of these applications (including screen capturing) start to have an effect on this single processor machine. Maya can effectively optput the data between 8 - 12 frames per second depending on how many applications are running. The promising aspect of using UDP is that data can be sent from one computer to another via a network. This could effectively distribute the workload of complex combinations of processes to many devices.…
g languages and frameworks along the way, the inability to do simple things like looping, code branching and even text manipulation was a bit shocking at first.
On the other hand, I've never worked with any system that uses data trees and lists the way GH does, so wasn't used to considering the consequences of traditional methods on that amazing functionality. I also wasn't used to programming with geometry, curve directions, UV surfaces and so many other aspects of parametric CAD that GH handles rather well - once you begin to understand these things.
Things get messy for many reasons, quite often because the approach to creating the model results in fragmented curves, out of sequence, missing or mis-placed bits, etc., that people jump through hoops to deal with. Eventually, one learns to avoid messes in the first place by creating "clean" models that are well-behaved by design, avoiding common pitfalls.
I don't consider myself an expert, wizard or guru at all. Far from it. I just have too much free time on my hands and enjoy spending it here, solving puzzles, trying to help where I can and learning from reading other people's code. There are a lot of clever "tricks" for handling common problems that amaze me when I see them.
I see from your profile page that you've been on this forum since 2009, using Grasshopper five years longer than I have. Far from being a GH "newbie"! You must know there are threads dedicated to suggestions for improving GH, and I'm sure there are threads somewhere devoted to GH2? Wouldn't those be better places for expressing dissatisfaction and/or better ideas?
I guess I'm just more focused here on solving problems using GH as it exists now.…

I am trying to achieve the minimal path algorithm of Steiners tree in Python using the minimal path algorithm.The syntax would be as followsFirst I need to create a cube of any dimension.
Then I need to specify one origin say point A and destination point say B.
Now for this point A,B I need to create a machine based network which will automatically enroute A to B.
Where the angle will be constant i.e 120, length can be a variable, triangular node(steiners tree)using these constraints it will create a network.
Now, I should iterate the program in such a way that I should specify the further points say like A1 and B1 so on.The program will contain a limit constraint where it will come out of iteration loop and start a new loop,forming the network.
By this I will get a dense network of 120 deg branches.
The branching gets denser the moment I add source and destination points.
There can be 100 iterations to reach from A to B but the algorithm chooses the one following the minimal path.
I would be highly thankful to you if you would please share the python syntax and grasshopper definitionCapture.JPG for the same

Alan Dempsey of NEX, was in 2010, selected by the Centre for European Architecture/Chicago Athenaeum as one of the 40 most significant architects in the EU under 40. In 2008 he was selected by the British Council as one of the six most significant Design Entrepreneurs. He previously worked with Future Systems, OCEAN and Homa Farjadi. Alan was an AA Unit Tutor and is Director of the AA Independent’s Group (www.independentsgroup.net), which facilitates research into the use of computational design and fabrication. Alan has lectured, exhibited and been published worldwide. His work has received a number of awards, including a LEAF award for Spencer Dock Bridge, and a D&AD pencil for the [C]space DRL 10 Pavilion.
Robert Stuart Smith of Kokkugiais a Studio Course Master at the AA DRL. Robert previously worked for Lab Architecture Studio and Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners. He focuses on self-organisational systems and developmental growth, pursuing polyvalent and environmentally responsive affect. He leads consultation to Cecil Balmond on non-linear algorithmic design research. Kokkugia has projects in the USA, UK and Mexico, and is exhibited and published internationally.
Iván Ivanoff is an artist, programmer, and researcher. He searches for new forms of communication for the society of the future and is the director of different Media Labs worldwide. He founded the artistic collaborative i2off.org+r3nder.net, which develops multi-media and interactive projects, and Estado Lateral Media Lab to investigate and develop new technologies.
The Barra Funda district of São Paulo was once characterised by a mix of small industrial, commercial and residential programmes, but, as economic policies have favoured larger production industries, numerous companies have abandoned the area. In response, the workshop proposes the creation of new types of smaller industries to produce a mix of both consumption and production, manifested through micro-manufacturing interventions that can co-exist alongside retail and housing. Computational design and digital fabrication could be used to help create these new micro-industries, which in turn will help empower local craftsman to produce and sell directly to consumers through micro-manufacturing, located in small urban workshops.
The workshop will tap into emergent gallery scene of Barra Funda and local initiatives that use computational technology to introduce a new cultural and economic impetus. The workshop is a part of the International Festival of Electronic Language (FILE), an exhibition of interactive electronic technology, and will import these electronic technologies out of the galler, collaborating with local manufacturers, artists, and activists, with a goal of disseminating a high-tech yet low-cost and small-scale fabrication systems to promote this new micro-industrial movement. The name PAR is used to designate the radiation with wavelengths useful for plant photosynthesis. It is accepted that the PAR radiation ranges from 400 to 700 nm (McCree, 1972), although some authors consider the PAR from 350 to 850 nm.
The composition of the radiation changes with time, as a function of the Sun’s elevation and the cloudiness. When the Sun is low over the horizon, the short wavelengths are reduced (less UV and more red). The clouds reduce the amount of energy, greatly decreasing the NIR.
The PAR proportion in relation to the global radiation increases with scattering (diffusion). It is lower with clear sky and in the summer (45–48%).
