thing that MicroStation does (or doesn't). The eternal debate between us is that they focus to the so called BIM aspect of things (and obviously on interoperability matters - that said IFC2*4 is" implemented" in certain Bentley verticals like BA and others) whilst I'm after assembly/component puzzles (and on that matter ... MS ...hmm... to put it politely is not exactly CATIA and/or NX, he he).
On the other hand this paranoid obsession with Level/Layer driven CAD (I hate it) defines a red thick line between CAD and MCAD - because the most intelligent importer can't emulate the way that Siemens NX/CATIA classifies objects - and without control power means nothing.
On the other hand Microstation V9 (...soon) has interesting scripting capabilities (think Modo rather Generative Components) ... meaning that Grasshopper could work there in a rather nice way. I think that I must talk for that to Ray (he recently ditched the ancient legacy MS render engine in favor for the Luxology/Nexus engine). Ray still is negative to buy Act3D mind (hope that you know the mother of visual scripting - the Quest3D VR thing).
On the other hand - within the broad AEC aspect - things these days are different (especially in fast developing countries the likes of UAE, Saudi Arabia, certain ex USSR "democracies" etc etc). Studies are outsourced even at Preliminary Design stage to various sub-contractors (they undertake the Study completion per discipline as well). This means that N separate groups doing M aspects of the whole ... meaning entropy^(N*M) - that's chaos in plain English.
With this in mind I'm quite (a lot) skeptical about the practical meaning of the whole exchange thing in AEC - at least with regard the countries mentioned (not to mention that several portions of a modern AEC thing are made via MCAD apps - chaos^chaos.
I'll back with more focused issues on that matter.
But the big question is: Grasshopper of Generative Components? Well...let's talk serious SS bikes instead: think a Ducati 1198 and a BMW S1000RR (I have them both): which is "best"? The thing is that not always the best bunny is the fasted bunny and not always the fasted bunny is the best bunny.

4) Discuss possible applied research and design work for the National Conference on the Beginning Design Student paper, Machine Craft and the Contemporary Designer: exploring parameters and variables through making physical artifacts. I wrote the attached abstract and submitted it for the conference the past fall and it was accepted. To continue with the research I need to assemble a team of students that will help explore the principles I set forth by making physical objects with the cnc router. In exchange for helping with the research I will show participants how to use the cnc router, how to author machine code and provide you with the cnc controller interface software necessary to simulate machine movements. Not to mention, your work will be sited in the research paper I present at the conference at UNC Charlotte in March. More tomorrow night, of course.

All,
In response to Erik, who requested that I describe my intentions in a design-build project and to the article posted (definitely required reading for this group) I propose that we begin development of a project that spans the realm of "sustainable social" architecture and parametric design. The particulars of such a design do need to be made concrete, and it will be important to define the goals of such a project.
Therefore, I would suggest that this serve as a forum for the next few weeks for those interested in producing a built project. I agree with Nico that it may not be feasible to create the built piece, whatever it may be, this term; however we should have the groundwork and a plan in place by the end of the next 10 weeks.
Either way, I would ask that everyone who is interested to please provide as many concepts to this forum to begin a discussion. If you are indeed interested, please submit goals that this project could achieve (energy, socially, aesthetically, economically, related) and perhaps what you envision the project to physically be (shading device, public bench, water catchment, interactive thermal contraption, etc . . . )

When I read about your mention “the IFC file generate by DECODE”, the only thing I can imagine is that you grabbed a single file belonging to the hierarchy and probably you didn’t really understand the structure of the whole project database. As Valerio Bonora asked, I’m curios to understand what kind of professional relationship brings together a RhinoForYou trainer with one of the companies that participated to this public procurement. If this relationship doesn’t exist, please let me suggest you to consider the legal implications that your action may produce.
Secondly, reading your phrase “may be i could remodelize all the projet, but in few month not like DECODE, with real frabication constraint, not theoric”, I believe that you have no ideas of the complexity of this project and the series of difficulties that all the participants to the PRO phase met during its development, until the delivery of the procurement documentation. During the development of the project 12 people were dedicated for 6 months just to generate the model. Do you really believe to be able to do the same work all alone in a shorter period?
Probably, as a designer, you are not confident with the phases, relationships, processes and problems which characterize the development of such complex architectural project. Honestly, I cannot understand how you can affirm to be able to cover this work package without any support.
Thirdly, under a merely logical point of view, how can you imagine to find people so proud about their results if they, as you describe, are going to present/represent a “shame”? As Mr. Bonora affirmed, construction companies appreciated the result that we proposed to them and this fact actually distinguishes our reality from your assumptions.
Finally, even if you based your evaluation on a single file of the whole database that composes the Canopée project, even if you probably used this file for purposes that differ from those it was generated for, and even if you met a single bug or a mistake into this file, let me say that your post does not represent a professional approach to reporting and/or debugging. With your negative comment you didn’t allowed us to understand and evaluate the problem, and furthermore to understand where the problems comes from: and this last information, which is still missing, represents the unstable basis of your superficial comment.
Taking distance from your action, I believe that one of the most important concepts associated to a serious and professional approach of a single member into a wider community consists into the ability to accept and/or report each other’s mistakes. Reading your post I don’t feel you as part of this concept, not at all.
