Led by plug-in developer and structural engineer Clemens Preisinger, along with Zeynep Aksoz and Matthew Tam from the expert Karamba3D team, this three-day workshop will focus on methods of setting up structural systems in the parametric environment of Grasshopper. The participants will be guided through the basics of analyzing and interpreting structural models, to optimization processes, and how to integrate Karamba3D into C# scripts.
This workshop is aimed towards beginner to intermediate users of Karamba3D. However, advanced users are also encouraged to apply. It is open to both professional and academic users. For beginner users of Rhino and Grasshopper, there will be an optional introductory course one day before the Karamba3D course.
Karamba3D 1is a parametric structural engineering tool which provides accurate analysis of spatial trusses, frames, and shells. Karamba3D is fully embedded in the parametric design environment of Grasshopper, a plug-in for the 3D modeling tool Rhinoceros. This makes it easy to combine parameterized geometric models, finite element calculations, and optimization algorithms like Galapagos.
Course Outline
Introduction and presentation of project examples
Optimization of cross sections of line-based and surface-based elements
Geometric optimization
Topological optimization
Structural performance informed form finding
Understanding analysis algorithms embedded in Karamba3D and visualizing results
Complex workflow processes in Rhino, Grasshopper, and Karamba3D
Places are limited to a maximum of 10 participants with limited educational places. A minimum of 4 participants is required for the workshop to take place. The workshop will be canceled if this quota is not filled by October 28. The workshop will be taught in English.
Course Requirements
Basic Rhino and Grasshopper knowledge is recommended. An introductory course is offered.
No knowledge of Karamba3D is needed. Participants should bring their own laptops with Grasshopper and either Rhino 5 or Rhino 6 installed. You can download a 90-day trial version of Rhino. Karamba3D ½ year licenses for non-commercial use will be provided to all participants.

t taking part at the Object office in Poznań.
The intention of this event is to provide a relaxed and flexible tutoring experience, with only one goal – getting to know Grasshopper better. We will start with a very exhaustive introduction, then venture into the computational geometry world in whichever direction we like.
Schedule
The long duration of the series (with a possibility of extension) will enable each participant to come up with their own research problems during the learning process. The scope of those problems will have a major influence in setting the direction of each workshop. While a couple of initial meetings will be solely spend on Grasshopper basics, the latter part of the series will have a more open character.
Each meeting day starts at 10 AM and lasts till 5 PM, with an hour long break for lunch (14 hours of tutoring per meeting).
Planned meetings:
02/03 Dec | Intro_01.gh: user interface, geometry types, Rhino/GH connection
16/17 Dec | Intro_02.gh: data flow, paneling, geometry rationalization
06/07 Jan | Intro_03.gh: data I/O, excel, csv, data visualization, preparing geometry for fabrication
20/21 Jan | Intro_04.gh: working with complex definitions, project organization and helpful plugins
10/11 Feb | Intro_05.gh: looping with Anemone, generative design
17/18 Feb | Intro_06.gh: automating tasks with Anemone, scripting introduction
03/04 Mar | Intro_07.gh: scripting
17/18 Mar | Intro_08.gh: Kangaroo
14/15 Apr | Intro_09.gh: user_defined_1 (flexible)
28/29 Apr | Intro_10.gh: user_defined_2 (flexible)

The Responsive Surfaces Workshop _ LA 2012 will explore the use of Grasshopper, Firefly and Arduino as creative and technical tools in the design, simulation and prototyping of intelligent building skins. Grasshopper, a free plug-in for McNeel’s Rhino modeler, allows designers to create adjustable parametric forms through graphic icons rather than programming. Firefly is a new set of comprehensive software tools dedicated to bridging the gap between Grasshopper, theArduino micro-controller, the internet and beyond. It allows near real-time data flow between the 3D digital and physical worlds, and will read/write data to/from internet feeds, remote sensors, connect with machine vision protocols, and more.
Instructor: Jason Kelly Johnson, Firefly co-developer, Future Cities Lab and the CCA San Francisco Lecturer: Miles Kemp, President of Variate Labs and co-author of “Interactive Architecture”
Additional Information: Workshop Location: 8451 Beverly Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90048 (GOOGLE MAP) Required Materials: Each participant should bring their own Sparkfun Inventors Kit or equivalent. Software: Please have the following software installed on your personal laptop computer - Rhino (SR9) + the latest versions of Grasshopper, Firefly and Arduino.

lysing and assessing sustainable performance of buildings and structures, called sustainability-open. Yes, open-source: that means everybody can use it as much as they want. We hope that this will give designers and engineers to make more sustainable buildings and structures in the future. And you can take a look at our code - to learn or improve it if you like! The framework is still in early stage and doesn't do a lot yet at the moment, so this is your chance to become an early-adopter.(By the way, very soon new components will come out that will early let you do more.)
The framework is linked to Grasshopper and Rhino - as soon as we have a little bit more, we will add some links on this site too.
At the Design Modelling Symposium Berlin (September 28 - October 3)we will host a workshop over the weekend which will show you everything about the framework and its components, our future plans, etc. We will also teach you how to develop your own components. Not everything will be purely related to the framework as we will be doing a lot of .net development related to Rhino/Grasshopper and other parametric applications. If you would like to know more about the framework, take a look at: http://www.sustainability-open.com or follow us on Twitter: @sustainableopenIf you would like to sign up for the workshop in Berlin or would like to know more, go here:https://www.design-modelling-symposium.de/frontend/index.php?folder...Regards,Jeroen…

not rhinocommonPath
(this is not the bug but if the correction is not made, then the form doesn't clearly ask for the dll
Second part of the solution (and here it corrects the bug)
Do something so we do not execute line 53 -if (File.Exists(Path.Combine(path, "rhinocommon.dll")))- if path == null.
The way I did it is certainly not the most elegant one but it's efficient. I have added the two following line of code
if (path == null)
path = "C:\\";
--------------
Now I have also corrected the code so it finds the dll on my computer. But I'm not sure the installation is the same for everyone. On my computer the information GrashopperFinder.cs is looking for is not under the LocalMachine hive but under the CurrentUser hive! So FindGrasshopper (line 19) is never checking for the right hive.
As I'm on a Windows 7 - 64, I have just added at line 28 the following code
SearchRegistryKey(rh5_64_Reg, rh5_RegName, RegistryHive.CurrentUser, RegistryView.Registry64, strings);
Now everything seems to work with the latest version of Grasshopper. So next step is to put the right .NET version and also extend the wizard to Visual Studio Express 2012 or beyond (Already done for the wizard for Rhino, so it shouldn't be an bid problem).
Anyways, thank you if someone who know how to code can double check what I did and correct everything (i.e. put the right code on GitHub + the corrected template on the VisualStudioGallery

ers of the last surface in the Brep, however, only the corners of the bounding box of the surface are generated)
It seems the rs.SurfacePoints only returens the control points of a surface rather than the actual corners of the surface. Can you advise if there's a way to do it?
Thank you!
