giornata inaugurale sarà dedicata alla free-lecture introduttiva finalizzata alla realizzazione di un modello d'architettura complesso attraverso l'utilizzo di comandi e tecniche avanzate di rappresentazione con Grasshopper (plug-in parametrica di Rhinoceros) e 3dsMax. Sarà illustrato inoltre il potenziale di V-ray per 3dsMax realizzando un rendering concettuale. Durante il mini-corso dell' openDAY verranno mostrate le caratteristiche e le potenzialità degli strumenti per far luce sui nuovi valori assunti dalla modellazione 3D. La modellazione 3D sta interessando un pubblico sempre più vasto inserendosi in una nuova fase di ampia disponibilità per conoscenze, software, hardware di prototipazione e modelli. Pur mantenendo tutti i suoi valori già noti la questione si è talmente ampliata fino ad interessare norme giuridiche (diritti sui modelli ,concorrenza con offerte di servizi apparentemente simili, informazioni deformate e onfusione nei media) Makers University[http://www.makersuniversity.com], in collaborazione con parametricart, vi propone un punto di vista ampio e sintetico su queste tematiche.

The workshop is aimed at: students, postgraduates, architects, interior, product and urban designers, engineers, anybody interested.

The advancement of digital technology is helping architects to understand and respond to the complexity of the environment surrounding us.
In this 14 day workshop the various energies which exist in a given environment will be identified, analysed and then digital simulated.
Experimental structures capable of reconfiguring themselves in response to the mapped forces will be generated and fabricated.

During this day we will present the final workshop projects and our special guest, Patrik Schumacher will exploit the subject of computational design thinking and parametric architecture, by putting the accent on the subject “Parametric Semiology – Architecture as the interface of communication”
> OBJECTIVES:
The workshop objectives are two-fold, in the first phase the workshop focuses on the identification and analysis of resources inherent to the environmental context, thus developing a better understanding of their nature as well as optimized methods of use or response.

a machine that is light and very sturdy. I have taken my Macbook Pro all around the world, carry it with me every day, even dropped it a few times and its still totally fine. Its thin and light.
2) You get some actual support for your hardware even a few years down the line. My Macbook Pro is from 2012 and I can still walk in to any Apple Store and get help with it, which I have done many, many times in different places around the world - I never had to show a receipt or was charged any money for help. There is no PC/Laptop manufacturer in the world with anything close to that, because companies like Asus, Dell, etc. bring out dozens of new versions of laptops every year, so its much harder to service them after a few years.
3) This is the most important one, which usually people forget when they say that Macbooks are overpriced: Resale Value. If you have ever tried to sell an old PC/Laptop (I have a few times), you will know how little value they have even after just 2-3 years. Macbooks retain their value very well and even after 4 years you can still get 50% of your original price.
4) Of course you can install Windows on it and it runs perfectly. I have MacOS and Windows on it and both run absolutely fine. On the Windows side I have Rhino+GH, Maya and a few others. Having Windows is good, because some software still only runs on Windows (looking at you, 3DSMax!). Most other software also runs on MacOS. In the interest of sanity it is great to have an alternative to Windows for all the day to day stuff, like Mail, Calender, Photos, Presentations, etc. that just always works.
5) As for performance: Yes, Macbook Pros dont necessarily have the latest and greatest in graphics cards (the rest is on par with PC laptops), but unless you want to play games you will not need it. VRay RT can do GPU rendering, but you wont get great performance from a Notebook GPU anyways and it doesnt make sense to do rendering on a laptop (especially since you have a workstation). You could get one of the older Macbook Pro Retina Late 2013 or Mid 2014 models with the GTX750M by Nvidia, which will be usable to render using VRay RT, but of course not huge performance. Better to invest in a good used graphics card for your workstation like an Nvdia GTX980ti, which is the best value for money for GPU rendering right now (lots of used ones available).
So at least consider also getting a Macbook Pro. You can buy refurbished models (depending where you are) and they are like new, but a lot cheaper or even get an older one thats used. It will be a worthwile investment.
Take it from someone who has used dozens of PCs and Macs in my lifetime and have to do the IT support here at work (where we also use both).
I still have my Macbook Pro Retina from 2012 and its still running perfectly, super fast, and I can use Rhino and GH for huge files, do GPU Rendering with Octane Render and all sorts of other heavy computing stuff.

Objetivos:
El curso está dirigido a cada diseñador, ingeniero o arquitecto que quiere obtener una sólida base en modelado generativo y paramétrico dentro del flujo de trabajo en Rhinoceros.
En el curso se explorarán y construirán estructuras en el espacio paramétrico, incorporando entidades geométricas (Curvas, Superficies, Puntos, etc…) y usando patrones algorítmicos para la generación de estructuras con metabolismos contextualizados.
Cada paso será soportado con ejercicios que gradualmente incrementarán su complejidad.
El alumno aprenderá cómo trabajar con asociación geométrica y parámetros. Para perfeccionar asociación geométrica – asociación entre partes, asociación dinámica – las formas geométricas son generadas al seguir la conexión lógica entre la parte geométrica y sus restricciones, dimensión paramétrica y él proceso dinámico del diseño: Estimulamos el pensamiento relacional para la construcción de Diseño y Arquitectura de alto desempeño.
Resultados:
Los participantes con éste entrenamiento obtendrán las siguientes fundamentos.

s for architectural design, has been heralded as the new paradigm in architecture for the last decade. Digital design techniques coupled with rapid prototyping have permeated architectural education and practice at all levels. But, besides the endless rhetoric and baseless forms, what can these methods actually contribute to the field? What is the scope of their use?
This workshop seeks to answer these questions by investigating surfaces, surface mathematics and manipulations, and using this investigation to introduce students to the issues of design and fabrication of artifacts.
The workshop will thus introduce participants to the basic concepts for design utilizing scripting techniques, through the exploration of the Python language for Rhinoceros. Together with the study of syntax, data types and scripting techniques the focus will be put on the understanding of the digital tools in relation with the common practice and the ways to approach problems a designer might encounter while using them.

he Summer in the City program, part of the Portland School of Architecture and Allied Arts (an extension to University of Oregon).
Using both Grasshopper and the Firefly plug-in, this workshop will focus on the design of innovative facade prototypes that are configurable, sensate, and active. Students will become familiar with the terminology used in interactive facade design including an overview of hardware (ie.sensors, actuators, and programmable microcontrollers) as well as software interfaces terminology. We'll learn new prototyping techniques and develop digital and physical models which can respond to a plurality of environmental and user driven forces. This workshop will take a hands-on approach, and you will walk away with the ability to build your own custom electronic circuits (using the Arduino), as well as create interactive simulations and models.
This course will primarily focus on physical computing techniques. Unfortunately, given the time constraints of the workshop, I will not be able to provide an extensive overview of the Grasshopper interface (it is suggested that participants have some familiarity with the Rhino/Grasshopper environment). There are many great online resources to get you up to speed relatively quickly if you are new to this software. This is a good place to start.

This course aims to develop a link between the virtual and the real context model through structural or environmental simulations, using other software or plug-ins dedicated. Through this link the virtual model receives physical properties that can further modify and adapt the initial model. This creates feedback loops that can optimize the design to provide an object responsive to environmental conditions.

io, alle ore 19:30 presso la Mediateca MARTE di Cava de’ Tirreni (Sa), la lecture magistralis dell’arch. Walter Nicolino dal titolo “Augmented visions / Responsive spaces”, un viaggio culturale che, attraversando gli studi progettuali a diverse scale condotti tra la sede torinese e il centro ricerca di Boston, mette in luce una attitudine nell’indagare e nel dar forma alle interazioni tra le persone, gli oggetti e gli spazi, al fine di fornire possibili risposte alle nuove istanze poste dalla rivoluzione digitale.
In apertura i saluti istituzionali del sindaco Marco Galdi, mentre a introdurre la lecture l’arch. Amleto Picerno, promotore del Mediterranean FabLab di Cava de’ Tirreni e tutor della Summer School digitalMed, il laboratorio progettuale che da quattro anni a questa parte, indaga temi, pratiche e tecniche dell’attuale panorama architettonico internazionale. È la smart city al centro della IV edizione di Summer School Digitalmed 2013, che si svolge a Salerno dal 22 al 28 luglio con l’obiettivo di creare un sistema di relazioni e di interazioni continue tra la città, le persone e l’ambiente in cui queste si rapportano in un continuo scambio di informazioni.
Ad esprimere la critic ai prototipi di progetto che emergeranno dal workshop digitalMed, sarà proprio Walter Nicolino, architetto di spicco del panorama italiano, coinvolto in numerosi progetti di ricerca al Senseable City Lab del MIT di Boston, insieme all’arch. Carlo Ratti con cui è fondatore e socio dello studio torinese CARLORATTIASSOCIATI.
Il 26 luglio lo space 1.0 della Mediateca MARTE di Cava de’ Tirreni si fa, dunque, arena d’avanguardia per un interessante dibattito durante il quale, a proposito della Summer School digitalMed, si ragionerà anche sul modo in cui le tecnologie digitali influenzano l’architettura.
«Da qualche tempo a questa parte possiamo scegliere se orientarci alla perfezione tramite navigatori GPS o perderci come sognanti flâneur metropolitani; possiamo associare in un batter d'occhio infiniti layers di dati a un luogo, oppure contemplarne in silenzio il paesaggio; possiamo anticipare la realtà con sofisticate rappresentazioni virtuali, oppure esercitarci in giocose autocostruzioni partecipate.
Possiamo avere l'una e l'altra cosa: non si tratta di una scelta tra il mondo reale e quello virtuale, come predetto da parte della letteratura agli albori dell’era digitale, ma si tratta di capire come il nostro ambiente costruito e gli spazi in cui viviamo stiano imparando a parlare un nuovo linguaggio e ad interagire in modo sempre maggiore con le persone - afferma Walter Nicolino che parafrasando Le Corbusier “La civilisation digitale cherche et trouvera son expression architecturale”, sottolinea l’importanza di integrare le nuove tecnologie e radici locali senza perdere la visione e la dimensione umana della città: All’architettura è richiesta una revisione dei propri strumenti per creare spazi flessibili, inclusivi, in grado di adattarsi ai nuovi modi di vivere e lavorare e di rispondere in modo interattivo alle nostre esigenze».
