Yesterday I was asked a modified version of the script. Now it supports planes, so it should be easier to use.

cool! I also recently adapted the old version to use an input plane instead of a point... i'll have to look at your script to see if we made the same solution.
thanks for your reply... is there anyway that your script could take care of the hack that fancywires has made afterwards? it would be great to have each letter returned cleaned and joined, so there were exactly the same number of curves in the output as characters in the input...
i am basically clueless with VB and .net scripting so far, but i can code in AS3 and php, so a small push in the right direction might get me far...
How can one return one single curve in a letter like "O"? Do you mean using single-stroke fonts? Or maybe returning a brep (polysurface) as output?

make sure I add this information to groundTerrain_ inputs in the next few days.
So if you are using "Gismo Terrain Generator" component (former "Ladybug Terrain Generator 2" component), only the following types are allowed for groundTerrain_ input: type_ = 2 (surface with rectangular edges)
type_ = 3 (surface with circular edges)If you are using "Ladybug Terrain Generator" component, then only the:
type_ = 1 (surface with rectangular edges)
is allowed.
As for terrain not being colored when it is created as a surface, you can analyse it additionally with "Terrain Analysis" component for Elevation analysis type. It can even be colored for rendering afterwards by using the "OSM Render Mesh" component. Check the attached file below.Have in mind that in urban areas "Ladybug Terrain Generator" component produces much more precise terrain than "Gismo Terrain Generator" component. On the other hand, the latter component can generate much larger terrain areas (up to 10 000 sq km2, at least in theory).
The reason why component might still work even though a terrain mesh has been added to the groundTerrain_ input is probably because once groundTerrain_ input fails to convert a mesh to a brep, this results in it being equal to None. Component then considers as if groundTerrain_ input is empty and runs as if nothing has been added to it (the buildings are laid down on a flat plane with 0,0,0 as the plane origin).

We developed this construction methodology earlier this year while working on a large scale parametric structure for Midburn, the Israeli Burning Man. While doing so I used grasshopper to generate the facets for the geometry, while a friend on the team (Matan Zohar) wrote a javascript app that translated the mesh into connectors and slots for CNC manufacturing. I wrote this component as an exercise in learning rhinoscript and python, with the purpose of bringing the functionality into the grasshopper workflow. It's now to the point where it is working for triangle and square welded meshes while outputting the connectors and slots as an unorganized list.
Questions and To Do List
1. I'm new to object oriented coding and functions, and basically just wrote the whole thing as a series of conditional loops with two dimensional arrays holding the data. Planning on restructuring this better, would love any tips.
2. Right now outputting the connectors and slots on the input mesh itself in 3D, planning on setting this up layed out on one plane to organize for cutting. I was wondering if there are any existing tools for this or if I need to do this manually.
3. Labeling connectors and slots. Is there anyway to output text from python that can be later baked into the rhino for labeling?…
This is the actual reason I'm going through all this. I want to develop an algorithm that can be applied consistently and produce good results.
Here is a a little background. I'm working on my master's thesis in structural analysis. My thesis is on seismic behaviour of a roman temple in Portugal. I will be using a method of analysis suitable for block structures called the discrete element method. I am using a commercial code called 3DEC for this.
Now in order to the analysis I need to construct a 3D block model of my structure. I received a 3D scan of the entire structure (in *.wrl) format and spent a week trying to clean it up and slice it into the blocks that make up the structure. Now I want to use the scanned geometry of the blocks and describe a simplified prism around each that will represent the block in my analysis. I've attached a file with one of the columns in the temple. I think (at least with my tests so far) that it is representative of the all the blocks I'm dealing with.
Now my criteria for creation of the blocks:
I would like the contact area between the blocks to be as close as possible to the actual drum contact area,
I would like to get the volume of the blocks to be as close as possible (secondary to the contact area) to the volume of the actual drums in order to insure that the weight distribution in the structure is as close to reality as possible,
I would like the shape of the contact area to be as close to reality as possible
I order to satisfy all these requirements, I've done the following in my grasshopper file:
I take a section at the top and bottom of each of the drum meshes. I use this to extract the contact outline at the top and bottom of the drum. This is sometimes problematic and requires me to clean up the model and remove features that interfere.
Next I take each surface and try to fit a minimum circle around it. I try to do this because in my mind this is the best possible way to find the actual centre of the drum when there is cut outs and deterioration. This works well as long as more than half of the contact surface is still in its circular shape (third block from bottom in the example file doesn't satisfy this requirement and thus causes problems).
Knowing the centre, I use an algorithm I created in VB to search for one of the flutes on the contact profile. My ideas is that if I can find one of the flutes, I can then find the others by just going around at 30 degrees (there are 12 flutes) and find the location of all the flutes. In the VB code I've tried to explain my algorithm so I won't explain it here. I also think this algorithm is needlessly complicated and stupid as I'll explain later.
Once I've got one of the flutes, I just find the intersection of a line with at every 30 degrees with the outline curve.
Having all (12) points around the perimeter, I use an loop to scale the shape around the centre of the circle I found in step 1 to get the area within a tolerance value of the actual contact area (satisfying requirement 1). I was using HoopSnake before, but it required resetting every time so I decided to write my own thing.
I then connect the points on both top and bottom to get a solid block.
Now the problems are as follows:
Sometimes the algorithm doesn't find the best location as the starting point. As I said an important thing is that the circle is tangent to the flutes and that is true only if the column profile is larger than a half-circle.
The software I use requires convex blocks. I've tried to remedy this by using convex hull component before step 5 to insure the surfaces are convex.
I'm having issues sometimes with the alignment of top and bottom points. I think I just need to implement a component that sorts the points around a single basis so that there is no twisting.
I've been experimenting with convex hull as a general approach for defining the corner points, but I'm having problem take the convex hull curve and breaking it into a 12 sided polygon, preserving as much as possible the location of the flutes and the general shape of the contact surface.
I'm really sorry about the long post and complicated question. I hope someone can give some pointers on what I could try. I understand that this is not an easy question and that it is more a question of doing something rather than asking about grasshopper itself. My goal is to have an algorithm that I can explain as a general method for others to use in the future when dealing with these structures. This is only a small minor part of my thesis (the analysis is what is important) but it is taking a lot of time to figure out.
If you have any other questions, I would be more than happy to provide a better explanation. In the file I have created a region with all my input parameters. You can choose a different mesh from that point and change various settings. I hope that is self-explanatory.

ke triangle faces like they are in the 2D case of mostly hexagons/pentagons being the dual of a triangular mesh. What you are seeing is in fact fragments of the original non-flat mesh surface.
Perhaps I could isolate the mostly hexagons themselves and create alternative cells with patches for faces to handle non-flat faces. See, if you look very close at the literature figures, they simply leave out the lines in their actual surface faces that themselves have multiple mesh faces, whereas I'm outputting NURBS so end up with polysurface faces when I make a formal clipped Voronoi.
In the 2D case, flattening the cell edges is equivalent to flattening the 3D faces, but that's rarely what people want to do in the 2D case so they just chop the boundary up into curved little cell edges:
It was going to be difficult to clip the 3D case at all without grabbing a small hexagonal/pentagonal piece of the original mesh but once I have done that, I can then possibly replace it with a single surface often non-flat patch, as an option instead. If I tried to make them all flat it would require altering the geometry at least in places, likely most places. See the figure on the right. The faces are not flat!
The question is whether the Rhino Patch command will reliably close the cell with a mere patch on there instead of a faceted polysurface.
I'll look into this. One option is to include the center point in the patch forming command, to not flatten the face so much.
Doing Patch in Rhino, manually, I'm *not* getting a closable solid easily:
Any ideas? I can increase the spans of the patch I guess, without a huge memory hit since it's just surface pieces. Even with 10 spans and stiffness only 1 it still won't close though. Ah, it's because it has sharp facets from the clipping itself and a patch will simply not form a sharp kink in the face of a single surface so will never close?! 30 spans is already getting up there and it won't close either:
Not even if I include a mesh version of the polysurface face in my Patch command will it close the solid, even with low stiffness, since it simply will not make a proper kink in the the edge. It can't really, since a patch is a single surface and it would require huge numbers of UV control points to get within closing tolerance.
I'm kind of stumped. I've included a file if you want to show me how to patch that surface.

up before you can produce a nice render. If you are using vray for Rhino you need to first learn how to set up (as an architect) a nice solar daylight system with environment, is actually very easy. (1 - set up sun lighting, 2 - set up environment, 3 - choose correct settings, such as activating indirect illumination)
However, since sketchup is the perfect draft tool for architectural design, it happens to have an environment with daylight defined already when you open an empty file. Vray for sketchup knows how to use all these settings so the only thing you need to do is to hit render. Apart from that you need to learn some simple material settings, which you find here: http://www.vray.com/vray_for_sketchup/manual/, the same manual for rhino here: http://www.vray.com/vray_for_rhino/manual/
The advantage of using vray for sketchup rather than for rhino (although if you can handle vray for one program its exactly the same for the other), is that you can easily import models from 3d warehouse. Sketchup is an excellent render set-up platform, except its only 32-bit so a to complex scene will simply not render. Rhino 64-bit will handle this better.
Conclusion, learn vray, whatever you learn can be applied to sketchup, rhino and 3ds max. Sketchup is probably a tool you already use and vray for sketchup will render with correct settings by default. Later when you take it to the next step you can go one and learn vray 2.0 for 3dsmax.
Personally I like using Luxology render engine that comes with Microstation, simply because I handle it better and Microstation is the best tool for architects in my opinion. However Vray is similar but more powerful.…

To make it really elegant you could try to make some "topology language" - have you seen this talk by Robert Lang http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/en/robert_lang_folds_way_new_origami.... ?
You can always make only few parametric types of structures - like leg, hand etc. (this is much easier than Mr.Lang's ) which can change its sizes, but topology stays the same.
Beside - Your sandwich looks really good, i played something similiar before.... have you tried thin PE (polyethylene) sheets ? Its similiar to PP (polypropylene) but a little bit softer. It is (PP) commonly used as tic tac box cap ( http://www.absolutelynarcissism.co/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Tic-T... ) and some say that it can fold/unfold about 1000000 times. It would really simplify the whole production (just one cnc router needed to obtain full structure). Of course bending it will require prefabrication to look like e.g. http://www.grasshopper3d.com/video/the-swarm-2012 by Mr. Wieland Schmidt.
To clear things up :
1. It certainly can be done with rhino/gh
2. You should write some more on how should it all work (what you provide as geometry)
3. You should also provide some more info how 2d drawing looks now.

So my problem is:
1.- I want to achieve a kagome, hexagonal gridshell that keeps the bamboo pieces like straight geodesic lines.
2.- I also would like to keep the curved bamboo as splines, so I imagine this will give the easiest method for bending the bamboo at the real scale. As Mårten Nettelbladt in his blog http://thegeometryofbending.blogspot.jp/ mentions, the best way will be to keep the geometry where all the pieces have a spline curvature ( or as B.K.P. Horn calls it “The curve of last energy”) In order to achieve splines do I need to make the grid a Dynamic relaxation “Kangaroo”? will this help?
3.- I would also like to simulate the bending of the elements from a 2D to a 3D, but maybe this can be a next step on the definition…
Some of the common problems that I notice in the definitions found is that when people do weaving, the lines don't bend flat to the geometry but rather they twist so when you look close the cross of pieces intersect, which is impossible in real life…
As you can see there are a number od issues here, I apologize to put them all together, maybe it makes this confusing but I think is better to look at the whole picture. I have been reading a lot but I have no idea how to start.
The more I read the more interesting the subject becomes but the more confused I become. Is there some kind soul that could give me a hand? Any help will be really appreciated.
