Instructions for Installing Ladybug + Honeybee: (Follow steps 1-6 for basic functionality and 1-11 for full functionality) 0. If you have an old version of LB+HB, download the file here (https://app.box.com/s/ds96em9l6stxpcw8kgtf) and open it in Grasshopper to remove your old Ladybug and Honeybee version. 1. Make sure that you have a working copy of both Rhino and Grasshopper installed. 2. Open Rhino and type "Grasshopper" into the command line (without quotations). Wait for grasshopper to load. 3. Install GHPython by downloading the file at this link (http://www.food4rhino.com/project/ghpython?ufh) and drag the .gha file onto the Grasshopper canvas. 4. Select and drag all of the files in the "userObjects" folder (downloaded with this instructions file) onto your Grasshopper canvas. You should see Ladybug and Honeybee appear as tabs on the grasshopper tool bar. (If you are reading this instruction on github you can download them from http://www.food4rhino.com/project/ladybug-honeybee) 5. Download the files at this link (https://app.box.com/s/bh9sbpgajdtmmystv3n4), unzip them and copy the contents to both C:\ladybug and C:\Users\[yourUsername]\AppData\Roaming\Ladybug. 6. Restart Rhino and Grasshopper. You now have a fully-functioning Ladybug. For Honeybee, continue to the following: 7. Install Radiance to C:\Radiance by downloading it from this link (https://github.com/NREL/Radiance/releases/download/4.2.2/radiance-4...) and running the exe. 6. Install Daysim to C:\DAYSIM by downloading it at this link (http://daysim.ning.com/page/download) and running the exe. 8. Install Energy Plus 8.1 to C:\EnergyPlusV8-1-0 by going to the DOE website (http://apps1.eere.energy.gov/buildings/energyplus/energyplus_downlo...), making an account, going to "download older versions of EnergyPlus, selecting 8.1 and running the exe. 9. Copy falsecolor2.exe (http://pyrat.googlecode.com/files/falsecolor2.exe) and evalglare.exe (http://www.ise.fraunhofer.de/en/downloads-englisch/software/evalgla...) to C:\Radiance\bin 10. Download the OpenStudio Libraries (https://app.box.com/s/y2sx16k98g1lfd3r47zi) and unzip them to C:\ladybug\OpenStudio. 11. You now have a fully-working version of Ladybug + Honeybee. Get started visualizing weather data with these video tutorials (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLruLh1AdY-Sj_XGz3kzHUoWmpWDX...).
It works for me..

on Grasshopper, I'd probably research how people use the tools. For example; take a well known architectural shape and make algorithms that duplicate this shape in a number of languages (written English, drawn images, RhinoScript, MEL, AutoLISP, Grasshopper etc. etc.), then compare these different implementations. Which approach allows you to achieve the goal with least steps? Which representation can be most easily explained to others? Which can be most easily changed? and so on and so forth.
Voronoi diagrams are pretty mundane these days. Not that long ago only the best and brightest could use them for architectural purposes, but now everyone who is smart enough to install a plugin can.
One of the truly useful features of Grasshopper (and -of course- programming in general) over traditional approaches is that it can handle vast amounts of data. Given a couple of hours I can create a Voronoi diagram for 500 points by hand, but I would be hard pressed to manually evaluate the year-average of sun light contribution on every vertex of a 10000 point mesh.
If you're looking to do something reasonably innovative (and I think 10~11 weeks is plenty of time for that), I have yet to see someone do 3D isovist data maps of architectural models. I think Grasshopper can be used to at least aid in researching isovist properties of platonic, organic and custom volumes.
Or... a lot of people worry about shadow-casting properties of building envelopes, but nobody seems to be interested in solar reflection via windows and other reflective surfaces.
Or... given the average dioptre of the human eye, what can we say about the level of detail that is perceivable on every square unit of the facade of a 50 story building?
Or... how are grooves in a floor, wall or facade surface perceived as one walks past them? Or take it even further and research the rate of change of visual properties of a bas-relief surface.

y working on is a tensegrity structure that uses cables and a tensile fabric to apply traction. The basic cell of the structure is a sail with two parallel rods.
The easy one was the fabric anchored to the extremes of the rod. I got great results with the tensegrity model , very similar to physical models that I was working on.
But then I tried the same thing with the fabric anchored all along the rods, but it proved to be hard (read all the "rod discussion"). I tried the bending force, but was too unstable. The best model I got was by applying different stiffness to the mesh, specifically, to the lines that coincide with the anchors.
It's by no means the solution that I had in mind, but the next days I'll be testing it with the structure. I came across with the next thing to my ideal solution, Daniel's boat (https://vimeo.com/30128894), but I couldn't replicate it. Anyone has some idea of a different, more rigid solution? Even in K2, which I really don't understand yet, but any clue would be helpful.
Aside of that, I was also having trouble applying real values of stiffness. The third archive has the same definition that the first, but with real stiff values (the rods are wood, k=10^7 N/m, cables are nylon k=2x10^5 N/m). I adjusted the timestep and the subiterations, but it doesn't work as stable and smooth as the whatever-stiffness-sail. I don't know if isn't correctly calibrated, or my computer its too old (it pretty old and slow) or simply isn't a good definition.
If anyone has any idea it would be very much appreciated!

In case you need the data - please email me on **nisha.m234@gmail.com**. **Algorithm:** I am trying to find principal curvatures for extracting the ridges and valleys. The steps I am following is: 1. Take a point x 2. Find its k nearest neighbors. I used k from 3 to 20. 3. average the k nearest neighbors => gives (_x, _y, _z) 4. compute covariance matrix 5. Now I take eigen values and eigen vectors of this covariance matrix 6. I get u, v and n here from eigen vectors. u is a vector corresponding to largest eigen value v corresponding to 2nd largest n is 3rd smallest vector corresponding to smallest eigen value 7. is an emerging research area that exploits the principles and logic of natural systems in the design of the built environment. Sandworks* investigates the development of a computational design system informed by the sand self-formation behaviour. The knowledge objective is to understand the process of coding the material physical behaviour that follows the geometrical constraints of developable, ruled and hyperbolic surfaces formed by sand. Through physical and digital form-finding exercises, the workshop will explore the relationships between material and its shaping processes in the generation of form in parallel to theoretical lectures and discussion on cutting edge approaches of computational thinking, design and fabrication in architecture and design. Participants will be introduced to ruled based design thinking through digital design and fabrication systems as well as physical modelling and prototyping techniques.. The workshop aim is to provide an understanding framework of how such processes occur in nature and find their translation in the design of the artificial. *This research started at the Architectural Association school of architecture in London exploring the design and fabrication techniques of sand tectonic system and now it is pursued at ENSA Paris-Malaquias focusing on the development of the machinic morphogenetic possibilities of sand self-formation with robotic distribution of material through addition, subtraction and deposition techniques.www.sandworks.org /// Application To apply, please follow this link to fill the application form https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1n_LN2svFTT79kCqndxznKRj4PX8J8__FVNKvjiHTeJU/viewform /// Fees* 1700 EGP for students / 2000 EGP for graduates and young professionals * 20 % discount for early registration and payment before 22 nd of August 2014 more info on the workshop webpage: http://www.encodestudio.net/#!sandworks/c1nn1…
corner, solid surface, reflectance 0.18, when there is NO direct sunlight on the sensor (illuminance<10000 lux).
Shading Group 1 State 2: curtains along the glass, trans surface, transmittance 0.2, when there is direct sunlight on the sensor (illuminance>=10000 lux).
After the run I checked the ill files in the folder and the shading schedule in the intgain.csv file and found some inconsistency, taking Jan 1st as an example
In the intgain.csv, the shading schedule shows the curtain only covers the glass (state 2) at 9.5,11.5,13.5.
But in the ILL file with no dynamic shading, the sensor point (first column after hour) illuminance is above 10000 lux from 10 to 15. So the shading schedule should be 1 from 9.5 to 14.5, right? Or am I missing something here?
I'm trying to get the lux hours/accumulated illuminance for the test point, but there is no ILL file that actually combined the ill, state-1 ill, and state-2 ill together based on the shading schedule? (My understanding is the "read annual result I" visualizes the Daylight Autonomy based on the advanced shading schedule but didn't generate another ill file?)
I was doing it in Excel and found the difference between shading schedule and the sensor reading. Please let me know if I made any mistakes in the simulation setting! Any comments on a better data processing method would be much appreciated!

ies and ideas (in this case agent-based modelling) simply because they are the new cool thing to do and, if we think carefully about how the integration of agent-based modeling will improve the accuracy and usefulness of our models, we are more likely to make lasting contributions through their integration.
For example, it seems vital to me that such agent-based models be grounded in some clear quantifiable observations of human behavior in real buildings as opposed to relying on our own coefficients to represent how valuable we think certain things are to the occupants. I will give an example of two agent-based ideas that I have had - one of which has turned out to seem much more valuable in the long-run because of it's grounding in real-world data and I plan to implement soon.
To start with the more valuable example, ever since I read this awesome book on adaptive thermal comfort (https://books.google.com/books?id=vE7FBQAAQBAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=adaptive+thermal+comfort&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjDmO6avNnJAhUD9h4KHXWVBuAQ6AEIHDAA#v=onepage&q=adaptive%20thermal%20comfort&f=false), I have had several ideas for how to integrate the findings of recent comfort surveys into our energy models. Generally, the focus of thermal comfort research seems to be shifting from theoretical human energy balance calculations to surveys of occupant behavior, giving us a lot of great data that helps incorporate these behavioral factors in our energy models. To continue one of the ideas that you mention, Theodore, here is a plot from the book that describes the window-opening behavior of occupants as the indoor temperature increases:
Currently, EnergyPlus does not easily allow you to set such a function for window-opening, as you point out but the incorporation of this behavior seems necessary to produce an accurate model of a naturally ventilated building (since opening all of the windows as soon as the indoor temperature hits 21 C is far from realistic). To get around this, I was thinking of including an option on the nat vent component that will put in a series of IF/THEN nat vent objects that approximate this smooth function through a step function:
IF 19 < indoor temperature < 20 THEN WindowOpening = 10%
IF 20 < indoor temperature < 21 THEN WindowOpening = 15%
IF 21 < indoor temperature < 22 THEN WindowOpening = 21%
IF 22 < indoor temperature < 23 THEN WindowOpening = 35%
...
I am hoping to implement this soon.
To describe the example that I have realized was not so helpful with time, when I was first drafting the idea for high-resolution comfort maps (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLruLh1AdY-Sj3ehUTSfKa1IHPSiuJU52A), I originally thought that I would develop computer models an animations of occupants moving around the thermally diverse space to make themselves more comfortable. Once I started to get into this, however, I realized that the social characteristics of a space usually have a much larger impact on where people place themselves than the thermal characteristics and it is not until the thermal characteristics become very uncomfortable or the presence of other people is completely removed that the thermal environment dominates the movement behavior. Thus, in order to model the occupant behavior, I would have to code in the relative importance of a large number of these social characteristics in relation to thermal comfort, which would have been a process of me simply making up coefficients to produce cool-looking but somewhat meaningless animations. It is only when my nicely-designed thermal environments were aligned with the social/programmatic characteristics of the space that I could argue that I was justifiably adding value since the thermal characteristics were not in contradiction to or being weighted against the social ones. So, in the end, realized that all I needed in order to produce a good design was to align the thermal environment with the placing of program and the agent-based modelling would not have enabled the production of a much better design. This is the reason why the human silhouettes are manually placed in the thermal animations on the youtube playlist in the above link and is the reason why I do not intend to incorporate agent-based modelling in this particular manner.
Let me know your thoughts on this as I realize I may also be looking at this from a narrow perspective that is not informed by all that agent-based modelling has to offer.

Spread across various cities / countries, we are establishing a global dialogue in the domain of computational design by actively organizing and participating in workshops, lectures, presentations & symposia. While rat[LAB] has taken a top-down approach of exploring computational design through industry, a parallel, bottom-up approach is also in-line to involve students of all levels, from design & related backgrounds.…
ies a step further towards informative models, how to extract data through a parametric process and design analysis which leads to performance based schema. The workshop will cover some advanced modeling techniques in grasshopper along with some useful grasshopper plugins "GECO,WEAVERBIRD,KANGAROO and more". An introductory to ecotect analysis will also be inculded. The workshop is dedicated to intermediate Grasshopper users " knowledge of GRASSHOPPER equivalent to which gained in Parametricisim WS or higher is preferred".Knowledge of ECOTECT is a plus but not necessary".
