ke 20 samples per day, 50 days out of the year for 1000 samples) from each panel and calculate the % of occlusion. Allow that % to be the % "open" of each panel. Design the opening in each panel to be something cool and proportional. Profit.
You could even break it down by a finite number of available panel types(say 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% open) and create an efficient production. All of these things can be paramterized to allow for more samples or more panel types as needed or based on your calculation limits.
The only exception would be proper environmental analysis, say, if you were trying to reduce solar gain in summer and allow for it in winter. You would want to split this calculation between when you need to be gaining heat and where you want to be shading. Then extrapolate the percentage between the two. You may even need a gradient of heat gain through fall/spring. The possibilities depend on how much you know about the mechanical requirements of the area/building.
That would be my approach. If I have more time tonight I will try and put something together on this as its been something I'd like to have in my back pocket....
Edit: You would also need to analyze the angle of incidence as it could have an effect on the amount of solar gain.....…

OH! You had 'Display | Shaded Preview' disabled - why? Now I see that you have 80 X 55 'SFrames', which will be VERY SLOW. I never understood why you abandon 'PopGeo'? But that many points will be extremely slow either way. I won't wait that long.
You're making this way too hard for me, bobbi.
I said early on that it's best to work with a very low count until everything works properly. Solid unions are one of the ragged edges of Grasshopper; slow and prone to failure, depending on the complexity of the geometry (co-planar surfaces, etc.).

The failure happens with the addition of the InteropServices line. I'm mid-project right now, and it's pretty critical that I regain the ability to go back and forth from GH to Excel in the scripting environment...does anyone know if I need to deactivate any security options in Windows, make sure any dll's are properly installed...anything? I've tried all of the other Excel components that various users here have already been generous enough to share (my scripts are all based on them). I can't seem to find any documentation (that I understand) about this particular error message, or how to fix it. Really could use a little help!

This Parametric Design course will provide the participants with the necessary knowledge and ability to use Grasshopper, a free visual programming plugin in Rhinoceros; you will be guided through a series of hands-on exercises that highlight NURBS modeling and its concepts. We will introduce Grasshopper as a graphical algorithm editor tightly integrated with Rhino’s 3D modeling tools. You will also learn how Rhino is used to render models for visualization, translate 3D models for prototyping, and export 3D models into 2D CAD or graphics programs.

The difference with programs like Inventor is that they are made for production, regardless of the fabrication method. I won't go into detail about that, and instead focus on the modeling process.
In this little model, the starting point actually is a bit obvious, the foundation.
The only contents in the 3dm file are 27 lines. These indicate the location of each footing, and the direction of the tilt of each column. Everything else is defined in GH with the use of numbers as input parameters.
Needless to say, instead of those lines you could obviously generate lines and control the number of columns and panels, hence establish their layout, with any algorithmic or non-algorithmic criteria you please. That marks a major difference between GH and Inventor.
You can generate geometry with Inventor via scripting/customization (beyond iLogic), with transient graphics for visual feedback similar to GH's red-default previews. However Inventor's modeling functions are not set to input and output data trees. I won't go into detail on that, but suffice to say that the data tree associativity of GH was for me the first major difference I noticed. I've used other apps with node diagram interfaces like digital fusion for non-linear video editing since the late 90's, so the canvas did not call my attention when I first started using GH.

And the locations in elevation for connection points are set. Those elevations were just numbers I copied from Excel, but you can obviously control that any way you please. I was just trying to model this quickly.
