Meeting Agenda:
1) Discuss what the group would like to learn this term through our regular scheduled meetings. Topics include the priority and sequence of Grasshopper exercises we would like to explore during the winter term from http://www.digitaltoolbox.info/grasshopper_basic.html and Processing tutorials from the Processing Handbook I received from MIT.
2) Watch the Matt Storus Church Machine video and have a discussion about parametric and generative tools in design.
If you have a chance, please read the following article by Tim Love called Between Mission Statement and Parametric Model at:
http://places.designobserver.com/entry.html?entry=10757
3) Discuss a possible design build project over the following winter and spring terms using the skill set this group is developing. Conversation led by Chris Nielson (please see comments below for a brief backstory)
4) Discuss possible applied research and design work for the National Conference on the Beginning Design Student paper, Machine Craft and the Contemporary Designer: exploring parameters and variables through making physical artifacts. I wrote the attached abstract and submitted it for the conference the past fall and it was accepted. To continue with the research I need to assemble a team of students that will help explore the principles I set forth by making physical objects with the cnc router. In exchange for helping with the research I will show participants how to use the cnc router, how to author machine code and provide you with the cnc controller interface software necessary to simulate machine movements. Not to mention, your work will be sited in the research paper I present at the conference at UNC Charlotte in March. More tomorrow night, of course.
Thank you for your interest and I hope to see you there.
Sincerely,
Erik Hegre

All,
In response to Erik, who requested that I describe my intentions in a design-build project and to the article posted (definitely required reading for this group) I propose that we begin development of a project that spans the realm of "sustainable social" architecture and parametric design. The particulars of such a design do need to be made concrete, and it will be important to define the goals of such a project.
Therefore, I would suggest that this serve as a forum for the next few weeks for those interested in producing a built project. I agree with Nico that it may not be feasible to create the built piece, whatever it may be, this term; however we should have the groundwork and a plan in place by the end of the next 10 weeks.
Either way, I would ask that everyone who is interested to please provide as many concepts to this forum to begin a discussion. If you are indeed interested, please submit goals that this project could achieve (energy, socially, aesthetically, economically, related) and perhaps what you envision the project to physically be (shading device, public bench, water catchment, interactive thermal contraption, etc . . . )
I look forward to hearing your thoughts!
Cheers,
Christopher…
or create a form through code.
2) Add a public function to your component that displays this form, I recommend you use form.ShowDialog() for now to avoid weird conditions with non-modal forms.
3) Override the method Menu_AppendCustomComponentItems() on your Component and add an extra menu item that will show the form (i.e. when clicked, it will call the function defined in step [2].
4) Create a new class and derive it from Grasshopper.Kernel.Attributes.GH_ComponentAttributes. (if you don't want to offer double-click functionality, you can skip steps 4 to 6)
5) Override the RespondToMouseDoubleClick() method on the new attributes and also call the function defined in step [2]
6) Override the CreateAttributes() method on your Component class and construct an instance of the custom attributes defined in step [4] instead.
7) Once you've shown the form and the user has clicked OK, you need to assign values and invalidate the Component, then start a new Solution.
Here's some code:
Public Class MySpecialComponentAttributes
Inherits GH_ComponentAttributes
Public Sub New(ByVal comp As MySpecialComponent)
MyBase.New(comp)
End Sub
Public Overrides Function RespondToMouseDoubleClick( _
ByVal sender As GH_Canvas, _
ByVal e As GH_CanvasMouseEvent) As GH_ObjectResponse
DirectCast(Me.Owner, MySpecialComponent).DisplayForm()
Return Canvas.GH_ObjectResponse.Handled
End Function
End Class
Public Class MySpecialComponent
Inherits GH_Component
.....
.....
Protected Overrides Sub Menu_AppendCustomComponentItems( _
ByVal iMenu As ToolStripDropDown)
Menu_AppendGenericMenuItem(iMenu, "Set Values", AddressOf Menu_SetValues)
End Sub
Private Sub Menu_SetValues(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As EventArgs)
DisplayForm()
End Sub
Public Sub DisplayForm()
Dim frm As New MySpecialForm()
Grasshopper.GUI.GH_WindowsFormUtil.CenterFormOnCursor(frm, True)
If (frm.ShowDialog() = DialogResult.OK) Then
'Harvest values from form and assign them to local variables
Me.ExpireSolution(True)
End If
End Sub
End Class

way everything is consolidated and people can share their thoughts.
1. Cluster rollover tips
Id like to be able to create rollover help text for each cluster input. This could be a right click thing once the cluster is created or something specified before creating the cluster (a string input for the cluster input arrows?)
2. Disconnect all outgoing
I'd like to be able to right click on an output of any component and disconnect all wires coming out of it.
3. Disconnect all selected
It would be cool if you could disconnect all incoming or outgoing wires from all currently selected components (instead of just one at a time).
4. List item dynamic slider
There has been a lot of discussion about dynamic range sliders and the issues that they would cause. Id like one specifically for list item selection. This would be an integer slider that would have a range of 0 to the list length-1. If the range remaps and the previous value is no longer available, I think it's best to have the current value stay as close to the previous value as possible.
5. Cluster slider/toggle inputs
I think it could be valuable to cluster a series of variable inputs (like sliders or toggles) to make a sort of options cluster. In this case you could just have a list of sliders and toggles each connected directly to a cluster output arrow, select all and create your cluster. This would be great with the value list component as well.
6. Have a component that could output the x and y location of actual components on the canvas relative to the top left corner... Not sure exactly what you could do with this but I think someone could do something interesting with it.
7. 3d MD slider. I see the option is greyed out and don't see a way to activate it... Still under development? Seems like it could be just like the color picker. Would be cool.
That's all I can think of right now. I'm sure there will be more to come in the future.
Feel free to comment.

r visual programming tools in the games world. MS's Kodu, looks interesting. Kismet and Visual3d look even more interesting..... mainly because they are more 'interactive' or 'reactive', rather than DAG-based.
Seems like the evolution path for GH-similar apps is:
1. base 3d or CAD app based on C/C++ code.
2. Add scripting language interface
3. Add some kind of visual interface
4. Add graph sorting / propagation engine
5. Re-jig base 3d or CADD app to make managed/interpreted scripts run faster, multi-threaded.
6. Add dynamic typed language, DLR stuff
6. ....
6. Add constraints solver...?
7. Rebuild CAD display engine to be procedural at the GPU level?
Seems like there are available tools for converting scripts into some kind of flowchart. There are even visual debuggers. MS even has something called the 'Debugger Canvas'. Spreadsheet constraints.
Seems like the time is ripe for lots of new apps like GH.

this was about some boring building I wouldn't respond ... but here we are talking sardines.
Here's my take on that matter:
1. The 4 C# first create/use a nurbs, then define some random planes (and transformations) and then (a) either they place some humble stripes or ... er ... (b) sardines as instance definitions (NOTE: Load Rhino file first).
2. All important decisions are the ones in yellow groups.
3. You control what you get via this (priority on stripes or sardines? that's the 1M Q):
4. If you decide for sardines (the right thing to do) then you must ENABLE the Sardiniser(C)(tm)(US patent pending) as follows:
5. The vodkaFactor on that Sardiniser C# adds some spice in the sardine placement (it does that by altering the priority on the "composite" transformation in use: first randomly rotate then planeToPlane .... or the other thing?).
6. Only the finest Da Morgada sardines are used in this definition:
7. Spot the WARNING in the filter related with what sardine to choose > do it wrong and no hard disk on your workstation > no risk no fun > sorry Amigos, he he.
8. 1M question for you all: why placing sardines (it's real-time you know) is WAY faster than creating these humble stripes?
9. Although the sardines are placed in real time as regards your CPU ... the critical factor is your GPU (display mode: rendered).
10.Still WIP (dancing sardines in the next update).
have some sardine fun, best, Lord of SardineLand…

thisthe errorthat appen when i lunch E+ with only one zone....what is going on???? …
mainly grasshopper. (If it were just Rhino it perhaps would have been easier for me). I've been working on it for a while now and I unfortunately am a bit stuck.
Below are some of my concerns:
1) I know the theory of what I'm suppose to do which is to have the rectangular base and scale it then array it up. However I noticed that the thickness of the each lath and support varies. There are 25 laths in all and from the structure diagram I have gathered that there are basically 4 groups of the same thickness from the base going up its the first 9, then 7, then 5 and then the top 3. I just can't seem to figure out how to vary the thickness. I would assume the attached lath and support definition diagrams would help but unfortunately I don't know how to read it. I've tried some formulas which didn't exactly work but I still included them in the file.
2) I also need to figure out how to create the hole in the structure which is the entrance. I know in Rhino I could just Boolean it out but is there a way to do it in grasshopper?
3) I also need helping figuring out the definition for putting the vertical supports in between each row. The diagram says something fancy about "Testing acceptable constraints in flexion and in shear, we find an acceptable eccentricity that varies with each row." Ok maybe it wasn't so fancy but I have no clue how to do that with grasshopper!
4) My lecturer wants a Structure Simulation which I'm going to assume is what number 3 is all about?
I've attached my progress so far and would appreciate any help possible. I'd prefer if anyone could guide me using basic things (without any fancy plug-ins unless it's absolutely necessary).
However, any help is appreciated! Thank you so much in advance.
Cheers!
Jo

release.
2. Of course, I agree the support is woeful for this at present. Find attached an example of trying to find a completely new definition for a target geometry. Using galapagos with these inputs help the machine get quite close. Obviously, its a combinatorial problem so bloat is an issue.
3. It's a great idea, and a thought I've had on the todo list. It's trickier than you think though due to the way you have to instantiate a component on the canvas. In addition, persistent data in the ingredient components that exists in the generated ones is possible.
4. Again, yes options for the inputs is a good idea and one I'm working on.
5. Indeed. Ideally, you should be able to put clusters in the ingredients. This is where things start to get very tricky without the help of David :) . If I can get user objects to work, then that's a step in the right direction. At present, you need to compile new components to get Embryo to include them.
6. Because it was the easiest to implement with the gene pools. Revising this to make it more efficient is a good idea, because at the moment it aint.
7. Good idea. I can include that in the options component.
Finally, just to say implementation in Grasshopper has its pros and cons, it's obviously not built for this kind of thing. In the future, I'd like to build an independent plug-in for Rhino that will handle GP better.
Anyway, thanks for having a go! I still intend to make the repository public.
As to what I do, I used to lead the Ramboll Computational Design team in London but we've all gone our separate ways now. I'm now a lecturer in Computational Design at the University of West of England (UWE) in the UK.

file. A TSpline made thing in fact.
2. This atroci ... er ... hmm ... I mean unspeakable beauty uses an exo-skeletal load bearing structure hence is THAT big (BTW: Apparently nobody knows what thermal bridge is nor thermal expansion nor vapor condensation ... but these are "minor" details these holly blob days, he he).
3. 2 means that some nodes of that "grid" MUST "meet" floors in order to support them and (hopefully) withstand some seismic forces. BTW: A Richter scale 9 (for an hour) is all what this building actually needs (that's acid "humor").
4. The "smarter" way to do this is to spread "some" (i.e a lot) random points (Note: David's algo yields "evenly-spaced-points" within the limits of the possible) on the guide blob (a polysurface in fact).
5. Then ... you need some algo that tests proximity AND "adjusts" the Z in order to have some node points "co-planar" (Z) with the floors.
6. Then you triangulate all that stuff (the points, that is) using some decent Ball Pivot Algorithm (NOT Delauney) and you get a triangulated mesh that "engulfs" the guide blob. If you want some quads (as shown) this is also possible.
7. So you have edges ... i.e poly lines (per mesh face) and if you offset them ... you have "drilling" profiles that you must use against a second guide "thickened" blob for creating a continuously smooth exo-skeletal LBS (as shown). Of course Rhino (being a surface modeller) could require years to do this solid difference opp (or an eternity).
8. Rounding the "lips" of that LBS Brep is out of question with Rhino or GH (but it can been done very easily using other apps). Then you must "split" the Brep (in modules? in nodes + "rodes"? you tell me) in order to make it in real-life (what about forgetting all that?, he he).
9. Then, there's the glazing thingy that is made via quads meaning planarity. This is achievable with Kangaroo2 but is a bit tricky.
Moral: WHAT a gigantic pile of worms is this thread of yours...
more soon.

r is open, the memory use jump quickly and stay at high level, even if I didn't open any GH file:
3. once I close GH (with Rhino still running), the memory use drop a bit, and rise again, but not to the high level as before:
4. once I close Rhino, the memory use will drop to normal level:
5. the GH components I'm using are installed locally on my computer:
I'm not sure if this is a problem with my computer in particular, as this issue only happened a few days ago. I'm using Rhino 5 SR7 64bit in Windows 7 Pro and the latest version of GH on my computer for quite a while with no obvious speed issue, and I didn't upgrade them recently.
Hope you can kindly advise!
Thank you!
