Question 1: How do I go about measuring the arc length of a parabola in Rhino? In a nutshell, I'm looking to accurately measure curve length in Rhino in this case using a parabola.
Question 2: Once I can measure the arc length of a parabola, how do I go about manually changing it to a specified length (Ex: If my arc length is 14, but I need it to be 24)? Followup question, is there a way to use a slider in Grasshopper to do this?
Question 3: Once I eventually am able to create a parabola of a specific arc length/curve length the next thing I'll be doing is to create a parabolic cylinder comprised of 6 inch squares (view image below for visual cue). Is there a way to change the scale of a parabolic cylinder while still maintaining the 6x6" grid/panels? I plan on using a 3D printer to print out 6x6" interlocking tiles that when glued will form a parabola, and would like to be able to do it for a variety of parabola sizes.

ide number n1= nx2^0 (if n=3; n0=3x1=3) / side length (L) / center axis on (H)
-Polygon2: on (P2) / side number n2= nx2^1 (of n=3; n1=3x2=6) / side length (L) / center axis on (H)
-Projection of (L) from (P1) to (P2) is made according:
*vertical axis on (H)
*a chosen angle (GAMMA) between axis on (H), and a vector [pointing the middle of (L) on (P1), from axis (H)] >> This is a constant for every shape of the first polygon.
Here is a GH file, with my start. To continue i find some difficulties about what option or icone to pick in and combine in GH.
I hope it could be makeable.
Thanks again,
AK

its way into parametric design on 24th February – 2nd March 2014. The workshop is designed to fulfill students' as well as professionals' requirements. The exceptional 30 seat workshop is part of the regular series of events called Parametric Bratislava, which is itself a unique activity in the central-european space. One week long workshop focused on architectural form-making, usage of digital techniques of parametric design is going to lead participants to the new approaches in both, design and architecture. ECOTYPE workshop is going to take place on 24th February – 2nd March 2014 (1 day optional Crash course + 6 days main course) at the Faculty of architecture, Slovak University of Technology. Renowned Serbian experts from Grupa Arhitekata Jelica Jovanović and Dragana Petrović are going to join forces with Italian Noumena architects Aldo Sollazzo and Iker Mugarra Flores to bring together the natural and the digital. The workshop is going to look into digital sensing structure subsystems, constituted by associative simulations of the relations between tectonics and the environment in which human activities take place according to specific programs. It is going to provide and control a constant flow of information about the changing internal and external conditions which is processed by a computational subsystem articulated by Rhinoceros 5 ( NURBS-based 3D modeling software) + Grasshopper 3D & Sub-Plugins (generative computation tools). Through these means new design opportunities are going to be explored. The resulting proposal challenges conventions and the way that design is conceived, stepping away from linear process and embracing holistic approaches. ECOTYPE workshop is meant for intermediate Grasshopper users. For the newcomers there is going to be available an optional one day Rhinoceros 3D + Grasshopper Crash course with Ján Pernecký (rese arch) and Fabio Palvelli (3D-Dreaming.com). The beginners are going to learn basic NURBS modelling, import/export techniques, best drafting practices and basic Grasshopper scripting – workflow, parameters, components, data structures, attractors, surface subdivision, mathematical and logical operations. - Aldo Sollazzo focuses on exploring critical issues in architecture, design, and urbanism through parametric design, scripting, and fabrication strategies.
- Iker Mugarra Flores is mainly specialized in advanced geometries and logics, prototyping and fabrication, environmental morphologies and holistic approaches to large and small scale strategic design ecologies.
- Jelica Jovanović is within Docomomo working on proposals for the protection and sustainable preservation policies of the modern movement architecture in Serbia.
- Dragana Petrović specializes on Bioclimatic design in Architecture.
- Ján Pernecký - Architect, researcher, curator, programmer, organizer.
- Fabio Palvelli - Architect, designer, researcher and publisher of architectural projects, workshop organizer. ECOTYPE's approach is focused on the architectural view of the geometry. The participants are going to get acquainted with a vital tools for producing algorithm-driven shapes with a strong sustainable concept. t, you can see 6 (+) signs with what you can add (A,B,C,P,Q,R).
Let's say you add A = 90 and B = 50.
Now you can't add the third angle (cause its 180-(50+90) = C output).
What you can add at the moment is P,Q,R.
You choose to add P = 10.
There is no more a possibility to add Q and R.
All component outputs now give us the data.
2. Triangle with P,Q,R
When you zoom the component, you can see 6 (+) signs with what you can add (A,B,C,P,Q,R).
Let's say you add P = 15, Q = 20.
Now if you add R, the component's outputs all the angles and edge lengths.
If R > P+Q then component throws warning. (> or >= ?)
You cannot add A,B or C anymone.
3.Triangle with P,Q and C
When you zoom the component, you can see 6 (+) signs with what you can add (A,B,C,P,Q,R).
Let's say you add P = 15, Q = 20.
Now if you add C (angle), the component's outputs all the angles and edge lengths.
You cannot add A,B or R anymone.
To make it all easier, disable the possibility to internalize the data.
Tolerance issue... Maybe round the angles always to floor , with 0.1 precision ?

he field of digital design, fabrication, emerging technology and makers. the experts spend two weeks in bratislava, developing their research project and at the end of their residency we invite eager and interested people – fellows – to form a think-tank and take part in the pinnacle of the project.the event will be highly experimental and no specific result is guaranteed. the event will be accessible also to people who want to observe and learn, however the purpose of the gathering is not to teach, but rather to experiment, consult, make and network. the rese arch lab is not a tutorial workshop, it’s a platform for common development.

research project
the project questions the current condition of the large scale 3d printing capabilities. while small scale, desktop 3d printers emerge each day with better and better quality of the output, large scale printing is based mostly on low fidelity concrete printing, or in few cases not-so-high-quality metal printing.we will try to develop new solutions for large scale, rapid 3d printing by merging different technologies. those will constitute the main structure of the designed output, while the 3d printing will be seen only as the solidifying agent.we will utilize the kuka robot with an attached abs/pla extruder as the main production tool.
call for fellows
the fellows will join the last 4 days of the research, consult the current state, come up with new ideas and help verify and test the outputs. the fellows are being called for through a portfolio and cv selection process. the exceptional individuals who can both, benefit from and contribute to the project will be selected by mateusz zwierzycki and jan pernecky. no specific number of open positions are available and it is possible that no one will be chosen.
call for trainees
it will be possible to attend the rese arch lab to the people with no expertise or previous experience. they will take a role of observers or trainees. it has to be explicitly stated though, that the event is not meant to teach any specific software or skills and the experiments can fail in achieving an output.
application
to apply send an email at lab@rese-arch.org. the deadline for the submissions is monday, 6 april 2015 at noon 12pm.
costs
the participation fee is fixed 150€ for the fellows and 200€ for the trainees. this covers only the participation at the rese arch lab event. the traveling expenses and accommodation costs need to be covered by the participants themselves.
equipment
various equipment will be available – including 3d printers, 3d scanners, milling machines, laser cutters, vinyl cutters.most of all, rese arch and partners have to their full disposal a robotic arm kuka kr15/2.
the requirements
if you find yourself proficient in: parametric design (viewed as aesthetics), 3d printing, robotics, scripting, architectural geometry, cam technologies or woodworking then the event will be surely interesting for you. at the same time we seek for people with exceptional sense for aesthetics, as the final output will be designed together (not just by the project leader).on the hardware/software side, we need you to bring your own laptop. we will work mainly with rhino/grasshopper.…
his comes in the form of an HTML page with links to every component, so you will need to view it in your web browser. (I use Chrome and it doesn't seem to be working correctly, but when opened in IE its fine.)
2) Included in each help topic for each component is the Inputs and Outputs descriptions and data types.
3) You supply the data. What you supply and how you supply it is for you to decide. There are umpteen different ways. Are you asking for a list of those ways for each input?
4) Points can either be Rhino objects or 3D co-ordinates. To create a point you can use any of these methods, but it mostly comes down to user preference. I like using Panels as this displays outside of the component.
5) Because of the nature of vectors they represent magnitude and direction but they don't have an independent location, so there is a component that will display vectors in Rhino.
6) The user.
7) There is a Primer on the front page. Here you find the Basics, but because GH is ever evolving in its current beta state you might find things that aren't relevant any more or simply don't work the same. And here is the reason why nobody is writing an update because it could be soon out of date.
8) Importing images by either dragging them from explorer onto the canvas or right click context menu Image...
9) Single line = Single Item of Data. Double line = Multiple items of data on the same Branch. Dashed Double Line = Multiple Data on Multiple Branches.
10) User preference
11) Toolbar management is probably the bane of David's life. Most things are logically placed. For example the Curve Tab, Primitives are any simple curve types that you are creating from scratch. Similarly Splines is for more complex curve types created from scratch. Analysis is where you find components that are finding answers supplied by curves, control points, curvature, parameters, end points etc. Division is a subset of this category but has a group of its own. And Utilities is where you find curve related actions that you want to perform, offsetting, rebuilding projecting, exploding etc.
12) I would image it would have been the Point On Curve component in Curve>Analysis. Why that group? You are not putting a point on a curve you are analysing a curve for the location of a point based on some parameters that you are supplying. For example "what is the mid point?"
I hope this goes some way towards answering you questions. No doubt this will have generated more so don't be afraid to ask, it took me several releases of Explicit History (aka Grasshopper) before I realised what the egg did, it never occurred to me that I could put my objects into Rhino when I was finished. Or the fact that I could use panels to 'see' data outputs.
Al the best,

this occasion, but it could be converted for DT in no time). Requires some minutes more as regards ... some things, but the usual update is due to some days.
Bad news: it's C#
Good news: User's Manual :
1. That thing (the C#, not me) after sorting (in a "sequential way", so tho speak) the panels (their order was chaotic) allows you to start the massacre by locating a focus of interest (and the user controllable +/- Range derived from it).2. The Range is variable (obviously) and takes care not to exceed the indices of the panel list (OK, that's elementary).
3. If you click the right button (Sadistic Q: where is it? he he) things are deleted and a new constantly self-updating list is your new List. Thus the massacre of panels is totally controllable. An autoZoom thing is also included (free of charge, but it's a bit nerve braking). Zoom factor is variable as well.
4. Then you move over (via the index slider) and start the massacre again. Notice the change of Range.
5. If you turn begin to false (initialization) and then begin to true > start all over again.
6. The other C# thing allows you to increment the index slider in a rather more convenient way. It's a bit weird: it uses delegates (A delegate is an object that knows how to call a method) and events (An event is a construct that exposes just the subset of delegate features required for the broadcaster/subscriber model - but don't ask what this means, he he) in order to talk with your slider (with a defined NickName) and perform the required value control.
NOTE: without realizing it you've just (indirectly) asked one of the most important questions even exposed in this Noble Forum. I hear you : what question? Well ... wait some days for the mother of all threads: "Total control in collections on a per Item basis"
may the Force (the dark option) be with you (and me)
best, Peter…
