Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi Santiago,

Thanks for developing such a truly amazing plugin.

I only started playing around with SkinDesigner earlier today, and have a total n00b question, so apologies if this has already been covered in the tutorials (only got through two of them so far).

I have a voronoi-based geometry with different things going on in different cells, which are offset so as to create a base structure of sorts. A bit like an undulating thickened grid running in between the cells, which in turn creates vertical cell faces that have non-uniform z heights.

I'm now trying to figure out a good way of populating these cells with panels, which in real life are to be CNC cut to shape on a Hundegger machine. SkinDesigner seems like an ideal tool for this.

When I try to apply my super-simple (sawn wood) panel to my irregular surfaces, however, they tile from the top edge (uniform for all surfaces) down to the top vertex rather than the bottom vertex, leaving a sliver of my surface bare.

Is there a way to have the panels follow the face geometry, so that the bottom of each panel gets "cut off" at an angle (which is what the Hundegger would do during the fabrication process)?

I attach a screenshot + definition.

Many thanks in advance,

Magnus

Hi Magnus,

Thanks for posting this, SkinDesigner does not support non-rectangular panels in its current release. That said, the new version of SkinDesigner that will be uploaded soon, does support quadrangular and triangular panels of irregular shape. This is by using the new -Surface-Panel mode- in the skin generator which basically will generate panels with the exact shape of the surfaces provided in the skinSurfaceList input.

I hope that makes sense, I included images below to illustrate this, the surfaces I created are of arbitrary widths, you will need to provide the correct surfaces yourself.

Also I included the gh definition using the latest SkinDesigner components used for this example in case you want to use them, here's the link. skindesignSurfacePanelMode.gh

Hope this helps,

Santiago

Hi Santiago,

Thank you so much - makes perfect sense, was exactly what I was looking for, works like a charm.

Truly appreciated - and now I look forward even more to the new version.

All best,
Magnus

Great, glad worked out for you.

I will post here a few notes about the new update once is out.

Best,
Santiago
