Trim Function will not work properly?

Hello everyone, I am relatively new to this program and I am having a bit of trouble, I wanted to take one extruded surface and trim it out of another. I tried to do this on three separate occasions, but only one of them worked. Could someone tell me why? What Was I doing wrong? Thank you for your help.
