Trim curved surface

Hi,

I've been struggling to trim the diamond shapes on my curved surface (shown on the left) so that there are holes inside, something like the planar surface I have created next to it. 

I use the split surface command but it doesn't seem to work. Can anyone help me fixing this problem?
