Hi man, check out Arduino (http://www.arduino.cc/), you can do pretty great stuff with it and its open source. But pleeeaase don't do more intelligent facade implementations, there are far too much of those around.
The other day I saw an Indian guy talking about intelligent structures for seismic countries, the great thing about that is you don't have to expend lots of structural material only for the event of a telluric movement (that is maybe one strong in 50 years) because this robotic structure would act against any movement. The problem is what happens if you run out of batteries, haha
