spiral on surface

I am currently attempting to put a spiral along a surface, which I have managed, but I want a tight, corkscrew curl - the idea is that i could perhaps 'unroll' the surface using one strip. Can anyone give me some pointers as to how I could achieve that? I feel like I'm nearly there!
