simplify curve

Hi

I'm looking for advise how to build a definition (some kind of fitness) that will automatically simplify curve from polyline or spline to spline.

I want to achieve a minimal number of control points within given tolerance - curve deviation.

So far I have to do it manually but it's painfull for a large dwgs.
