Select intersecting objects

Grasshopper doesn't understand layers, and it doesn't interact with objects in the Rhino document. That said, if you import geometry from Rhino into Grasshopper, you can definitely figure out which surfaces out of some large collection intersect with some other surface. See attached...

Thanks much David - It works perfectly. I was unaware of the Pipeline. Grasshopper continues to amaze.
