Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hello

I am new to grasshopper, I just wanted to see if it is the program for me!? I use rhino and t-splines. What I am trying to do is create is random path generation around a complex 3d shape. A bit like the geodesic and short path route around the shape. I am trying to create a sculpture by wrapping it in strips of carbon , needs to random!

I think I might be abit out of my depth.....any help would be great

Hi Angus,

Do you mean like Peter Donders' bench in this photo? http://www.grasshopper3d.com/photo/albums/benchstonehighres-1

Hi DannyNice to meet you last week.Yes I do, not sure if it would be filament wound though or just use prepreg and vacuum it down! Basically that is the look though, I am looking to create a sculptural permanent sunshade in this way?
CheersAngus
If no one else jumps in in the mean time I'll look into putting some thing together later this evening that should at least get you off to a start with it.

Here's another version:

but instead of having pipes. I've gone on to intersect the pipes (who's radius now vary randomly within a range) with the original BRep to get different width strips going around the BRep.

EDIT: Be warned this takes a while to compute you might want to go get a cup of tea in the mean time. upwards of 20 minutes

Hi Danny that looks like the sort of thing, it looks great! I have just managed to download grasshopper into rhino 4 where I have t splines so just going through the process of working it all out. I noticed you attached a ghx file for the first edition is there a way just to open this straight into gh.

thanks

Angus

There is no way to open Rhino and Grasshopper but clicking the file directly, but you can drag a file from the download section of your browser onto the canvas and it will open. (You have to have GH open first). I use Chrome and it makes it very easy.

Also You might find sometimes that the file does not download straight away but tries to open in a separate webpage as XML, if this happens just right click on the original link and use the save as option.

Hey Danny,

how did you change the pipes to the stripes? I can't find the part in your def where to change it. ..., to intersect the pipes with the original Brep to get, ...

And do you think it is possible to do this with only one stripe, like an "endless stripe"? Not having several single stripes, only one unique.

thx,

Sebastian

Hi Sebastian,

I simply used a Brep|Brep Intersection Component between the pipes and the original shape. This gave me two closed curves (mostly) for each pipe I then lofted them to get the section of shape that the pipes bounded. There were some bugs from the miss alignment of curves in the lofting component which I couldn't over come so I used a cull component to get ride of any surfaces greater than a certain area.

Be warned this was a very heavy processing job and I walked away from to have some dinner. It was longer than 25 minutes but less than an hour.

With regard to a continuous line, that is the method that Eric has proposed below.

Hi Danny,

thx for replying so fast. I tried it out it worked so far but I can't loft it with GH! In Rhino it works manually perfectly. I didn't get it with the cull component. No idea how to handle it. Attached you see what I get so far. The same to the continuous line. I hope you can guide me trough this problem?!

Thx,

Sebastian

yep,

I'm very pissed (UK Definition) but this is similar to the results I was getting. You need to set the loft options to Align Curves but it doesn't sort all of them so you then need to cull larger areas than expected.

for "sort" read correct

Hi Danny, iam trying to do this sort of thing to cut pipes, can you attacj grasshopper file please?thanks
