projecting curves onto surface and unrolling

I am currently in the process of developing a script that will take a geometry, section it (at given material thickness), and then flatten the outline of these sections to be cut on a laser. For fabrication purposes, I would like the outline of the neighboring section to be projected and flatten with the outline so that I will know exact placement during assembly. I have tried using the project command but haven't had much luck with getting it to be flattened and oriented on my cut sheet. Any help would be much appreciated.
