Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi everyone

I am trying to make some animations of "folding paper"

As you see in the video, the problem is, the area of the paper is changing during the animation, in the real world you can fold a peace of paper like this and of course the area would be constant.

What did i do wrong?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Mahdiyar,

The problem is that you are moving the points along simple arcs, but (in general) this will not be the case in reality, because the angle of each fold depends on the others.

When folding paper it follows certain constraints, such as preserving areas and lengths, and you need to build these into your definition somehow. For symmetrical arrangements of only a few parts, this can often be done with a sort of compass/straight-edge type geometric construction, using intersecting circles.

For more complex arrangements, it is usually necessary to switch to iterative techniques (such as this)

Thanks Daniel, I download your example
