Point Particles

I am looking to illustrate the flow of air through an engine, using points as an indicator of a gas.

Does anyone know of a way to illustrate points as if random particles passing along a number of curves?

Simplicity is key so I expect to populate the curves uniformly with traveling points... then turn off a number of curves and points to supply the random effect I am after.

Anyone attempted this kind of thing before?
