parametric model for fabrication

I have a basic component like this.

And I want to use this component (interlocking timber elements) to map the double curved surface (3d like a tube),like this.

could you give me some ideas, how can I start? should I start with a certain kind of pattern,then adjust it to have the interlocking ones?
