Offset a surface

Hello,

I've always asked myself if it is possible so offset a 4 sided surface but keep 3 sides on 
the old position. Preferably it should stay a geometry and not a mesh..
Is there a special tool for that? 
Sometimes I need an offset which aligns to the basic surface. I do it in Rhino but then I
have to switch a lot.
