need to create connectors at each point help

Hi Everyone again. 

So I have created my structure, which I needed as the base, but I also need to add in connectors, to each of the 6 beams coming together at the point. I would like the connector to look something like this.

to get this look, I would also need to shorten the beams on either end too

and because the steel would be exposed. I would need a timber veneer to cap over the exterior and interior. 

I have tried to attempt to start it, but failed!!

Also if someone can figure out what I have done wrong with the stairs for them to end up like that, it would be a great help.
