naive Catmull-Clark/mesh question

Hi,

I have a simple extruded brep doughnut which was then then meshed. The idea was to smooth out the edges using Catmull-Clark but instead I get a corrugated surface. Could someone please point me to the right mesh settings or whatever else it is I'm not doing correctly?
