Metaballs Pods

Hi, I want to create a model which is similar with the metaballs pods project shows below.

But I don't quite understand these comments, especially those math comments. And also there appeard a lot 'receiver', but I have no idea which part should them connect with.

Can anybody help with that? It would help a lot with my school project!
