mesh CP and meshEval: strange result

i "pull" a series of poins to a mesh and try to get the normals at the resulting parameters. the meshEval component throws some points somewhere in space, even though the original points are close to the mesh. welding won´t help either. (see attachement)

what´s wrong here?
any help appreciated.
