mapping a rectangular grid on a surface

hey guys,
i hava polyline (triangular and rectangular) which i convert to planar surface. i wanted to map a rectangular grig on that surface.. in case of a triangle, i wanted to map in perpendicular to the longest side of the triangle.. there are multiple surfaces.. can anyone tell me how to do this operation?
