algorithmic modeling for Rhino
Just for fun, I tried to get the Lunchbox Mobius strip to do a double self-intersecting loop. This was more of a struggle than I had expected!
It turns out that you cannot punch holes in a surface that intersects itself, so I had to break the surface down into three pieces, remove the holes and then re-assemble it again. I had various problems with surface continuity - it turns out that if you define the Mobius strip to have domain -2Pi to +2Pi then the ends join up nicely, but if you give it other domains, it either fails to join up or it overlaps itself. I think the UV extents must be based on the edges and not on the centre line.
I thickened up the surface, using Weaverbird. This has to be done from both sides, since Mobius strips have a twist!
Anyway, I'm attaching my .gh file in the hope that someone can improve on it - I would love some instruction on how to do this better! How do I get rid of the seams? It looks bad on the render, although seems to vanish in the stl file I sent to Shapeways. You will need Lunchbox, and if you care about the thickening, then also Weaverbird.
