Interweaving: How to make a surface out of one single component?

Hello everyone,

I am aiming to create a parametric form study using one single component to make a surface.

I had a look at Meanderplex:

It is composed by a population of parallax objects from one meander strip employing simple rules of self intersecting.  Perforations executed in disciplined sequences to generate the form.The overall form its a mega  cluster of interwoven components.

Does anyone know a good starting point on how I can produce and manipulate these kind of investigations digitally?
