Interactive Mapping

I came across something very interesting today from the behance network, and would like to know how its done.

The 2D pattern is not so hard to get, however, im really stumped on how they get the "goblet" or petal shaped form to align to the grid, and then give it the various extrusions.

Was the geometry created and then mapped to fit the grid, or is it generated within the grid? Its really cool, and id like to work with something like this.

Any help is greatly appreciated as always.
