Influencing the beginning input integer from the result of an output?

I am working on a script the begins with dividing a sloping line into a number of equally spaced points. I've created a stepping form based on the initial division and can alter the slope of the stepping form based on other inputs.

My question is how can I insert a gate or dispatch that will allow me to initially run the script to get a slope and, based on a min/max slope, alter the initial division integer automatically? If the larger than is false (good) I want i (original integer), but is larger than is true I want i-1.

I have tried it a number of ways and it seems to have a problem with self referencing loops. Any help with this would be much appreciated.
