'Infitity' Laser Cut Joints

Hello all,

So I built a little hoopsnake 'plant,' and with the idea of eventual laser cut fabrication, I am trying to construct a 'infinity' joint definition. As pictured I have come up with one technique, but it has its limitations. (also  note its not quite done, the pieces would be boolean differenced and laid out flat.)

I am wondering, what have other people done to solve this problem? I know it comes up all the time with laser cutting and parametric design, and  I am curious of to other techniques used. (pictured is the joint and the 'plant'.) Any ideas?
