How to create a region union for each set of curves in a tree

I have a data tree with groupings of a rectangle and a circle.  What I want is for each rectangle + circle pair to form a region join. To get this working properly I'm sure it has something to do with how I'm creating or extracting the tree, but I just can't see it.  Can someone show me how this should be done?
