Help with how to successfully manipulate a surface

Hi,

I am currently working on a project which aims to manipulate a surface via an image pattern into a series of peaks on troths. The desired outcome would be a stalactite-esque / fluctuating sinewave pattern perpendicular to the surface.

I have gotten to a certain point and created this on a flat surface, but the geometry distorts rapidly when applided to a desired curved surface. Could anyone help me out?

I have attached two files, the first being the flat geometry and the second the mapped to surface. The latter uses any curved surface and the mesh of that surface to generate vertices points to manipulate with (probably not the smartest way to do this, but i wasn't too sure how else too)
