help! squares on a surface wont face the same direction.

I am working on an idea for a school project. The idea is to create overlapping "shingles". As u can see i cannot get them to face all in one direction. As i adjust the number of columns and amount of squares the direction of the columns seem to change randomly. any help would be appreciated..

hi, could you please paste a clearer picture? I will appreciate it. Or send to my mail: buildpassion@gmail.com. Thank you.
Well now all the squares are facing the right direction in your proposal which is good, but this solution still offers some problems for me. I am trying to fabricate this out of plywood and i do not want the final surface to be flat. My old definition had vertical planes that intersected the surface. I used the curves created by those intersections to divide and make squares on, that way the squares were in a perfectly vertical line regardless of the curvature of the surface. then i was going to offset or extrude that
curve to make a skeletal structure that would hold all the shingles.

here is a better example of what i am trying to accomplish using the first definition, still having the problems where some columns will face a different direction.
