Help getting started on a definition

I'm looking to create a definition for something like this...the idea is to create something like this but made out of rectangular based shapes like the first two examples.  Relative new to grasshopper so would appreciate a point in the right direction, or maybe to some similar definitions that I could study to get me started. Thanks
