It seems to be a series of horizontal surfaces that have been cut by a (hand made? parametric?) blob on the inside. Then each layer is connected by an alternating grid of vertical columns which only exist if the plates on both sides have not been trimmed. Is that correct?

Oh yes, and one corner has been cut off as well.

This is a half-hour attempt to show the basic functionality needed for this project. The file doesn't check whether each column touches both plates, there's no control over the cutting, and it's entirely possible the grid of points can be made in an easier way...

Yes. The write up says the Blob inside is handmade and then sketched into the software.
