Facet object based on point distribution on surface

Hi,

i'm trying to wrap my head around creating a definition that can facet any object similarly to 'facetDome'.

I was thinking about randomly distributing points on a surface and creating the facets from there...but here's where i am stuck :/

I know it's not very far but can anyone point me into a possible direction i could go?

Are there similar things already?

Appreciate any material that could help me out.
