extrusions off a voided surace?

I have a rectangular volume with voids throughout it and I would like to extrude the parts of the surface. How would this be done ? I know that the area of the surface has to be calculated along with the some function being set that allows grasshopper to figure out where exactly to extrude. It also has to be somewhat random.
