Export geometry for metal/structural fabrication

Hi, 

I'm currently an arch student and was wondering how intricate grasshopper definitions, lets say of a curved diagrid/tessellated surface are exported to fabricators to actually build.

Is each node and connection referenced with a unique vector and angle or similar and is this stored in a excel database or something.... 

Really interested and would love an insight.. thanks!
