Divide extrude polyline

I am quite new in this so the solution mite be simple.
I have a close polyline which I wan to extrude and then to divide it but I cant do so, the divide command became to be red and only when I explode the polyline I can do so. 
I try to do the same on rectangle and I got the same problem but not with circle.

If one of you can help me and explain why does it not work I will be glad.
